they love to be pot bound- so, put the bulb in a pot and only cover it with dirt about halfway. after blooming, in the fall, cut the stalk down and water sparingly as it is dormant. around march, it should start to grow- and you can start fertilizing then. the reason they 'bloom' in december is because they are forced. as you can see, mine is growing well- it's a spring bulb :)

Love the amarylis. I can't mine to grow again since it bloomed over a year ago. :-(
