environmental monday- veggies

the above is my compost bin and porch 'garden.' i planted wax and green beans, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, carrots, onions, lettuce, strawberries- and i think that's it. i am going to see what comes and how well it comes- and decide what to keep and what isn't as successful. hopefully, i will have some nice compost for fall. i have to stir it around to see how it's doing- but it has been so cool- it isn't breaking down as quickly as i had hoped. oh well. can't be helped.

Betmo-

it's been cold here too (I'm near Scranton) and I am not sure what will become of my little porch seedlings.

I am going to try "container" gardening and like you- see what develops. And what doesn't.

I think this weather is really strange. Good luck with the compost, etc. Post updates and maybe we can compare notes!

Your containers look great!

My 3 tomato plants are doing well, the squash looks great, but I'm a bit worried about the cucumbers. While they're growing, they're kind of growing all weird and scraggly looking. Perhaps this is normal. I want to make them go up a trellis, and this may be part of the problem. Perhaps they are afraid of heights.

Good lookin' garden you got there! Putting some of our farmers to shame. You go, Betmo!

My mum has a green thumb too. There's honor in it, and it is "grounding." No pun intended. Thanks for the pics.

i cover the plants on the porch at night with old flannel pants and a tarp :) supposed to be in the 30's tonight but nice the rest of the week. hopefully- things will not die. if you keep them watered, they weather the cold better. dry dirt doesn't hold the heat. moist heat will insulate the roots. should i call that betmo's tip of the day? :)

Looks like some good eating up there in Betmo land. Our compost got infested with red ants. I'm working on getting rid of them with some "organic" treatment. We'll see. I might just have to start all over when I get back.

How many floors did you have to lug all that dirt and stuff up? Jeeze...I'm truly impressed!!

You might want to try this to beat the cold: spray paint a plastic milk jug black (or a can if you can get a tight cover for it), fill it with water, leave it out in the sun all day, then put it under the tarp with the flannel thingie. It'll give off enough stored heat to get your plants through the night. It's painted black, btw, because that color most easily absorbs and retains heat.
