part 3- meet the players

i thought that an introduction to some world politics was in order to establish how we as a planet got to the point we are at today- well into globalization and standardizing of the world. this movement has it's roots in the early part of the nineteenth century- probably before- but i decided to limit focus to the so-called modern age. i have a feeling that this will be a series within a series but hey- this isn't called life's journey for no reason. i am on a journey and i am not exactly sure where it is going to take me. i feel that many of these groups are the basis of our policies and the direction our country and planet is headed in. since i will be referring to some of these groups in later posts, i thought that i would introduce the players. so now for the recap:

intro- globalization
part 1
part 2

my observations about the groups that were founded were that they tended to be reactions to the world wars and the political climate during the cold war. that is fairly obvious. after the wars, manufacturing came into it's own and thus the rise of corporate structures as we have begun to know them.

The Ditchley Foundation is a British organisation based at Ditchley house near chipping, norton, oxfordshire which aims to promote international relations, especially Anglo-American relations, through a program of around fifteen annual conferences on matters of international interest. The foundation was incorporated in 1958 by Sir David Wills, descendant of the tobacco importing family, w.d. and h.o. wills of Bristol. At each conference, around forty invitees are drawn from senior levels of politics, business, the armed forces, media, and academia, with roughly a third of guests being American, a further third being British, with the remainder being of other nationalities. The director of the Foundation is usually a retired ambassador - the current director is jeremy greenstock, former British Ambassador to the United Nations.

The World Trade Organization (WTO) is an international, multilateral organization, which sets the rules for the global trading system and resolves disputes between its member states, all of whom are signatories to its approximately 30 agreements.

my theory is that most of these organizations advanced the notion that europe and north america should rule the world. with exception of perhaps opec, the same players belong in most of the groups and it is they who are putting forth policy and economic ideas. i am going to try and put together a graph or grid or something to make my theory clearer- but this is just an intro to the groups.

By the way, I pasted the "marriage is love banner" on my blog next to my GOP news banner if you don't mind. Love the ladies necking, not in the perverted sense. Keep up the good work.

Excellent post, betmo. I wish you were my history teacher when I was in high school. You definitely make it more interesting to read and include the most important stuff.

I think we are all on a journey and I think what will happen next will be greatly affected by whoever our next president is.

It is interesting to watch the birth of the EU. Each country seems to have a few different areas where they are reluctant to give up control.

Now I've had my coffee ... the problem with globalization and multinational treaties is marketing.
Do you fear the senate in star wars or the sente in the US? What I mean is, are you one of those who feel we are being oppressed because the Republicans are in power? Life is perception and what we perceive is what we reflect. If you played with history and put the Repblicans in control of the White House in the 90s, Democrats would howl at the actions of Pres. Clinton and vice versa the Republicans on GW this decade. Look back at whom you have supported and find the positives and negatives of what they did. Stir the grey matter between your ears, a favorite classroom line of mine, and look at the actions of your plotical hero form various ideoligical points of view. Many people claim to do this, but fe have the intestinal fortitude to really delve deeply into their pysche. Scary when you think about it.
But if these globo groups have kept us at peace, feed more poor than imagined and pushed a global economic package that has enabled millions to survive, are they evil? Or are they really bad at marketing themselves. Just things to ponder. Personally they make me nervous as a cat in room full of rocking chairs.
betmo you rock, do you mind if I link you?

i lean left of center- there is no doubt- but i am seeing things in a global sense. however, i don't think that it is coincidence that most of the power sucked up by the government recently has been at the hands of the cheney/rumsfeld crew. they are not really conservative and i am not sure what they are- so i call them new conservatives- neocons. what i want to do is take a look at america and at the rest of the planet and look at how we are reacting and adapting in the new global world. whether we like it or not isn't really relevent- the world is starting to work together for the most part- and we are taking a 'go it alone let's alienate folks' approach that is decidedly cold war. i want to explore why and how this will effect us if we don't stop it.

of course you may link to me obob- i would be delighted to have you on the list. :)

nah- i am retired from working with adolescents in a mental health/human services capacity. i worked for 51/2 years at a girl's group home run through catholic charities in conjunction with social services and then i ran 3 counties of a 6 county wide runaway/homeless and at risk youth program whose funding was cut- i would assume because money was needed elsewhere-probably iraq. i have a ba in psych from binghamton university and i taught myself the rest. my best subjects in school were social studies and english and my mother used to call me a house plant because i would rather read than go outside and play. as for my husband- we have 2 computers so we are often less than 10 feet apart doing different stuff. research is the fun part- the hard part is trying to decide how much to put out there- because i tend to get wordy.

my mother is actually the brains behind the outfit. she is the one who listens to the radio or watches the talking heads and then we put pieces together. i like puzzles so i just think of this whole thing as a puzzle to put together.

link away- as of now- the internet is free. :)
