many children left behind

various news organizations recently broke the story that the 'no child left behind' law was being skirted. many minority kids' test scores were simply not counted. why do you suppose that is? well, we all can see that the education system in this country is broken (see previous post) and apparently, the very law that bush touted as fixing the problem, has simply added to it. instead of helping to lift these children up- they are being taught to take tests instead of actually learning anything. we have had that system for decades here in new york- it's called the regents system. meaningless in the grander scheme of life. hopefully, there is some outrage. there are kids all over america who are being encouraged to take their ged instead of graduating with a high school diploma- in order to keep the numbers inflated. i worked with teens in crisis and at-risk youth in several capacities. trust me when i say that ged is NOT the same as a high school diploma.

i think that the education in this country is irrevocably broken and that we need to overhaul the entire outdated, outmoded system. the current 'no child left behind' is a farce and certainly is not the way to do it. absolutely zero thought went into it and mr. rove simply wanted a quick fix to bolster ratings and approval. thanks a bunch karl.

You tell him, sister Glenda. Fear (and guilt) is what I use in the Confessional. It works quite well.

I have been absolutely amazed at the amount of time students in this country spend watching videos in class, or doing puzzles. I agree. Our educational system needs a major overhall, and, I for one, am a big fan of the school system in Japan.

i would like to see some basic math, reading and critical thinking skills. i still haven't decided how i feel about compulsory education- but at the rate this country is going- it won't matter because it will still be the poor and underpriveleged who get left behind.
