WASP wake up call

as anyone in my life knows- i call them the way i see them- and people may not like that but i pretty much don't give a damn. i have been following a fellow blogster- moral highground- and his struggles to help indigenous people in australia. it really got me thinking- what the hell is wrong with white people?

after the unconscionable way we treated the american natives and african slaves here in america- and continue to do so (see jack abramoff and gulf coast victims of poverty in the wake of katrina), i am really thinking it is a white problem. middle class whites here in america have deserted every urban setting for the far away suburbs and the security and safety that they allegedly give. insulation maybe but the problems are still there and they are following you. unless you are part of the solution- you are part of the problem. while i am not advocating a welfare state or handouts, there is absolutely no reason in the modern world for there to be abject poverty and human suffering on the scale that there is.

i can't fathom the amount of hopelessness that the aboriginal peoples must feel- or the american and south american indians here on this continent must feel. we put our indians on reservations and gave them small pox soaked blankets as a thank you. we beat and enslaved black people for no reason other than they weren't like us. our indigenous people have a higher rate of alchohol abuse and drug use than the mainstream population and the poverty level on these reservations is astronomical. why? one rarely even hears about indians outside of history class here in america. i think it is our best kept secret of shame.

now, here in america, we are freaking out because brown people and black people are standing up for themselves. well, here's a news flash for all of you ostriches out there- your head can be in the sand for eternity and it won't make a difference. people of all different "colors"- yellow, brown, black- are the fastest growing populations in the world. there are currently over a billion people in asia and southeast asia alone- and guess what? they are 'yellow' and 'brown.' white has more money in general, but that doesn't make it right and it doesn't mean that it will always be so. oh- another big fyi to all of you evangelicals out there- islam is the fastest growing religion in the world.

so, what are we going to do to even the playing field? when are we going to start seeing people- all people- as fellow members of the human race regardless of color? i find it outrageous that in the 21st century aboriginal people in australia are living in horrendous conditions- made so by white people. my outrage extends to my home country as well for the needless poverty and racism that continues throughout our blue and red land. i find it ironic that we are linked by a red, white, and blue flag.

i know. it is very discouraging that the folks in the so-called 'bible belt' are the ones who live so abominably. not that we here in the 'rust belt' live high on the hog. i just can't wrap my mind around the living conditions in this country. we are supposed to be the richest country in the world. the middle class tries to flee but soon there won't be anywhere else to flee. more gated communities on the way.
