"In response to my last couple of posts - which implored Americans to vote for Barack Obama in the upcoming US presidential election - those who disagree with me (both here and via email) often put forward arguments that basically amount to one thing: that I should have a better understanding of conservative “middle America” (of course, when they say “conservative” in this case, what they really mean is “Christian fundamentalist”). Indeed, they seem to think that everyone across the world should try to gain a better understanding of them. Well for one thing, understanding is a two way street: one of the biggest problems the outside world has with fundamentalist middle America is their apparent unwillingness to try and understand the rest of the world, and the effect of US foreign policy on it. Besides, they seem to be confusing understanding with agreement - just because we don’t agree with them, doesn’t mean we don’t understand them. Indeed, I suspect the majority of people understand fundamentalist middle America quite well, as they are - let’s face it - so simple."

america is going down the tubes- and no, not the internets tubes. i used to be bitter about it because the fact of the matter is- the shortsighted, greedy, selfish thought processes that brought us to this point- are bringing down people like me as well. and, i began to believe that a total collapse would be a blessing- a shock big enough to jolt people into thinking about others instead of just themselves- but i came back to reality. because, reality is, the history of human collapse and human nature isn't encouraging. in downtimes, people don't rally together for the common good- they prey on the weaker and take from them for their own gain. living side by side in suburbia seems like a mayberry type existence- until you have a garden or water supply not had by said neighbors- then, you have to worry.
i don't know exactly what's going to happen- but i do know it ain't gonna be purty. and those right wing moralist types- will be the first ones to strap on the gun and go a'huntin'- but only for god and country dontcha know.

I'm reminded of that Rothschild aristocrat publicly supporting McCranky, saying the democrats don't understand "rednecks".
Yup, those aristocrats, theocrats, and autocrats are all the salt of the earth.
Great post, Bet! I support your view 500%, as you know.
P.S. I'm a follower but I don't know if that feature is working for me or not yet. Does one become a follower if they subscribe to the feed. Is that it?
pagan- you click on the link on the sidebar :) or in your dashboard- you can add folks manually :) thanks- i am a follower of yours too :)
Hey, Betmo, we dance on a razor's edge. If it's not nukes and war it's financial Armageddon. Well you can't say that life's dull, eh?
Hope you and yours are surviving.
A survivalist can knock off a moralist any day.:)
Thanks for promoting my article! I should point out that I have since changed the wording a little, as one of my republican readers objected to my use of the term "conservative", as he felt I was lumping him together with Christian fundamentalists. I thought this was a fair point, so I changed the wording to reflect the fact that I was talking about fundamentalists specifically - so please re-quote the new version. Thanks!
thank you sachiko- i did indeed change the wording to reflect your changes. although, i do disagree with your 'conservative' commenter. conservative thinking- fundamentalist and not- has led us down the garden path for far too long. and my thought- and my opinion only- is that conservatives are simple thinkers whose aversion to change and cultural differences has brought america to its knees. thanks for stopping by :)
Hi Betmo,
It still looks like the original wording to me.:)
Anyway, I agree with you about conservatives in general (I am anything but!), but it is factually correct that not all middle American conservatives are fundamentalist Christians, so I wanted to make sure my article was as factually accurate as possible. Otherwise these guys will just try to discredit me by harping on about my "errors", instead of dealing with the point of my article!
Oh, and make sure you stay posted - I will have a lot more to say on these issues in the run-up to the presidential election!
