Not too surprising, although it doesn't appear this way here in the midwest where we are.

Hmmmm, when I have more time I will have to look for these posts.

Not knowing, I must say, the people I've met, who "do" without "telling" everyone what they've done, has meant more to me, and made more of an impression than those who can't stop telling you what they've done and for whom.

Those impressions started @ age 5 and have only grown through the years.

I think organized religion as we once knew it is on it's way out. I'm all for a spiritual life, but don't always find that in organized religion.

Organized religion, daring to give the mob a run for it's money.

I agree completely with peacechick mary. Madonna has also said the same thing. That is basically spiritual thinking can be very good, and religious thinking can be very bad. Of course, bad people can make most good things bad.

I am for loving those we care about and who are close to us, and respecting those we are not close to or disagree with *as long as* they do not do harm-physically, emotionally, spiritually, or legally-or try to do harm to the rest of us. Wow, that sentence ran on.

Have a wonderful weekend, B!

You gained one with this blogger. Organized religion and the crafting of God as monster is to me the death knell of Christianity.

Young people are sick of organized religion which is too conservative and restrictive. They are looking for a way to express spirituality without embracing the bigotry, hatred, and politics that come along with Christianity these days.

Even better, many are just dropping religion and learning to live an ethical life without hypocritical scripture and the invisible support of a sky bully.

However, 25% of people polled about 2007 believe Jesus is coming back. Sigh...

A graffito prominent on the streets of Vancouver B.C. declared 'Religions divide - Spirituality unites.' I tend to agree. The biggest problem with organized religion is that it cannot of necessity escape from the 'us versus them' mentality. Once you have declared the existence of a congregation, everyone is either a member or not. A frightening example of this type of thought emerged when Dubya spoke on 9/12/01 -"You're either with us or against us."

Those whose experience has been of being on the inside of a congregation's boundaries were preconditioned to respond to this as a comforting balm. I shuddered even then. As time has shown Bush's definition of 'us' was impossibly narrow, his definition of 'against' incredibly broad.

Hi Betmo, No offence, but...
With a thousand gods one is never alone....With one god, one has always got some priest or other peastering for money, chasing the children....
Seriously, does the bible mention the line of evolution from ape to human? Did the old jews mention the chinese, and the fact that chinese civilisation was 5,000 years older than their own?

Because China existed long before the jews and christians ever got to writing that piece of fiction.
Which is one of the reasons why the chinese are quietly smiling.
To the open mind, creationism and monotheism are perhaps best described as enigmatic.
To a small child being indoctrinated into any religion, the process is most certainly unfair.

ahh- yes. indoctrination. the only way organized religion can sustain itself. i won't get started. i will save it for another post :)

a hearty you said it to

Sarah: "live an ethical life without hypocritical scripture and the invisible support of a sky bully"

...we call ourselves humanists.

BUT I stay away from the ORGANIZATION of Humanists since, well... if it walks like a duck, and talks like a duck... right?

and Sad: "The biggest problem with organized religion is that it cannot of necessity escape from the 'us versus them' mentality"

This is the cause of 99.9% of the conflicts in the world.

Every day I see the news and become more convinced that if people focussed on being good and moral from within rather than above, the world would be a happier place.
