constitution monday

hopefully, the surprises will slow down this week- i don't know if my heart can take it. i continue to be disillusioned at the state of affairs in america- and i know things aren't going to be fixed overnight. we are still the same people- fractured instead of united- and indeed, i believe we always have been. i have been thinking about this quite a bit because i still don't understand why 1) taxes are such a bad thing- especially if you want roads, water, garbage service, police, fire, and nursing homes to stick your indigent relatives in, and 2) why attempting to find peaceful solutions to problems FIRST instead of killing and disrupting millions of lives- is such a bad thing. i told one of my commenters that i would respond to one of his commenters more fully in a post. i am not inclined to do so. thinking about it- i am tired of rehashing the same logical arguement to rebut the same tired rhetoric. i will say this and that's it- the american economy is not strong despite the propaganda; the middle east is a dangerous place but terrorist attacks in america are not imminent or we would have had one by now- because homeland security is a money sucking joke, and christians are no better than any other religion on the planet just as white folks are not the end all and be all of the fucking planet. and that is that. please read the constitution. i know i post it every monday but please- take the time and actually read it and re- read it. the constitution is still not safe. commit it to memory- so you will have it with you always.

i am thinking taxes pretty much *have* to go up; it is only a statement to how much debt they created?

I agree with you, re taxes funding social services. The problem comes in when ten times as much goes out, as is collected in taxes. Both sides do this, as if it were a game to be played. "Oh, let them raise taxes." One side's goal is to starve every social program to death; the other side's goal is to create a social program for every Tom Dick, and Harry in the world. There has to be a middle ground somewhere, but as long as the voters buy their bullshit about taxes at election time, don't count on it!

Excellent post b. So many good pointa. I think the economy is good for those who are already well-off, but not for the rest of us.

I think it is a disgrace that the GOP continually tried to tie a minimum wage increase to even more tax cuts we could not afford.

And so Bush likes to trumpet that the deficit is not as bad as was expected. Hello, a deficit is still a deficit. That extra tax revenue could have paid for a lot of gear for our military, or for education, or health care.

As much as the GOP clims to care about children, they sure seem willing to send future generations the bill for what we spend today.

Hope you had a good weekend, b.

OH my...
Shaun, you just made me get the most horrible thought. Maybe the ONLY reason that the GOP is "Pro-Life" is just to create more and more poor taxpayers to pay off their indiscretions, such as the WAR?

Our grandchildren's grandchildren will still be paying only the INTEREST on the money that GWB has wasted in bringing Halliburt... I mean DEMOCRACY... *cough* to Iraq.

I have 5 printed and leather-bound copies of the Constitution. And I have 5 small grandsons. Who, when they are men, will each get a copy.

How Fahrenheit 451. Things do feel a little better though... the Dems aren't even in yet and the Bolton renomination is dead.

We seem to be greedy people. We want things like roads and security but we don't want to pay for it. I think most Americans would understand if the gov asked for more taxes to help pay for this war and get our military back in shape.

Bush's carrot in 2000 was tax cuts and the greedy Americans wanted it so bad they ignored everything else he stood for. That's his only claim to fame, he cut the taxes and as a result we are in deep financial shit.

I say,
Betmo for High Justice
Betmo for High Court Judge.

Tony Blair willing to talk to Syria & Iran to end violence in Iraq - now that's a backtrack since before the US elections they (son of Bush & Blair) were still considering strikes on Syria & Iran

PS - turns out Blair has got middle child syndrome, no wonder he's been son of Bush's pooooodle

Hopefully one result of the election going to the Dems., is to stop the attack on the Constitution.

They couldn't get the social changes (abortion, flag burning, ect., ect....) they wanted; so they wanted to pass amendments to change the Constitution for every little argument they couldn't win.

Our generation has made a mess of government, but the least we can do is to pass on the Constitution, unchanged.

Keep up the good work Betmo.

There is one section of the Constitution we still need to look out for -- our First Amendment separation of church and state.

The ONLY policy issue mentioned by Bush in his post-election press conference was 'faith-based' initiatives. In the 6 years he has been in office he has not been able to get a 'faith-based' bill through Congress.

We know that the Dems want to prove to Americans that they can lead, and we also know that even the most liberal of Dems -- Sen. Kennedy -- will cave on church-state separation issues. (Kennedy supported the school voucher bill following Katrina.)

I am seriously concerned that the Dems will try to advance their agenda at the expense of our First Amendment separation of church and state. I hope I'm wrong.

If you share my support for church-state separation there is a way you can help. Visit the First Freedom First web site at www.firstfreedomfirst.org and sign the petition. Encourage your friends and family to do the same.

If you would like to promote the project on your blog or web site contact me at corbin@au.org, and I will send you our latest promotional art.
