"i asked the senator (goldwater) for his thoughts on christian conservatives and their increasing presence in republican politics, and he minced no words. 'goddamn it john, ' he began, with a combination of anger, frustration and sorrow, ' the republicans are selling their soul to win elections.' he saw trouble coming. 'mark my words,' he said, 'if and when these preachers get control of the party, and they're sure trying to do so, it's going to be a terrible damn problem. frankly, these people frighten me. politics and governing demand compromise. the government won't work without it. but these christians believe they are acting in the name of god, so they can't and won't compromise. i know, i've tried to deal with them."

I knew there was a reason for seperation of church and state...
The word "christian" means Christ-like. Do you know ANYONE in Washington D.C. that is like that? NO. Especially those involved in various scandals. LOL
And for those government officials "playing God," I have to say that the last time I checked, the REAL God was doing His job quite nicely and doesn't require any help, thank you very much! It's time our government officials stick to the jobs they were elected to do, and do it in compliance with the U.S. Constitution. Let God take care of the rest!
Okay...I've preached enough this morning! HA HA!
good morning anon :) i agree- but the christian right does not. they own the repub party on the local level and vet any major players before they get the go ahead. what does that say about christians? i say it means that they care more about their agenda of hate than god's alleged agenda of love.
Goldwater is rolling in his grave! REAL conservatives (and christians for that matter) know that separation of church and state is imperative.
progressives know that in addition to the above, seperation of government and business is just as imperative. at least this progressive thinks so!
Remember this though, the republicans have isolated and run off the triditional members like myself. Not all of them will align themselves with the left, like I do and take the fight to them in a direct manner. But we will fight none the less.
If those other traditional conservatives had to watch their own people suffer at the hands of this administration, then I believe they too would be more vocal about it.
Katrina will go down as the reason not to have the republicans in office. As will the war in Iraq. We cannot afford to lose sight and let them get one second of sleep without hearing of the wrong done to our country.
Barry was right. Eisenhower said the same thing and he was right. It's trouble all right and we will get over this. It'll be a long time, tho.
