I am not surprised by this news at all. Seems like we're going to hell in a handbasket as the saying goes, but I feel optimistic today for some unknown reason. The cycle will return to good at some point. I am praying that it is sooner rather than later. I hope I feel like this for a while, but the world situation has me wavering often.
Tomorrow morning, (Wednesday), Mrs. Spadoman will be out on the front lines joining a peaceful protest that takes place every Wednesday morning in Edina, Minnesota at Alliant Technologies where depleated uranium weapons are made. She is there, a long way from home, because she misses going there every Wednesday like she has for the past 3-4 years before we moved. She also is gathering information for a large scale protest that will take place October 2nd at Alliant. If anyone wants information, please e-mail me.
Betmo, I left a response to your comment about camping, go look see.
Looks quite plausible. The Israeli-Lebabon fighting creates the kind of international crisis that makes people rally to the Party in Power (the Republicans)...and just before the November midterms.
"you forgot to include this part of the article that may give a little perspective on things:
"Of all of Israel's wars since 1948, this was the one for which Israel was most prepared," said Gerald Steinberg, professor of political science at Bar-Ilan University. "In a sense, the preparation began in May 2000, immediately after the Israeli withdrawal, when it became clear the international community was not going to prevent Hezbollah from stockpiling missiles and attacking Israel.""
That puts things a little more in perspective, and might help to dispell any of those false myths that this is some big bad evil Israel acting as political pawns of the US.
This stuff is life or death for them... seriously research whats going on before you rush to assume.
One must ask, why are america and israel the two most beligerent nations on earth? Why has america found it necessary to have killed millions of civilians since ww2? Let us not forget that the state of Israel was created just 60 years ago, by the political dealings of Herzl and Rothschild, Balfour and Rockefellow. Google those four names and see! Why would an american oilman want to help to establish a heavily-armed pro-american state in the middle east? Why did Hitler want to invade Russia? Same reason...OIL.
Sadly, even most of the Israeli people do not realise that they too are just pawns in the big game of global domination. Sadder still, most Israelis are not semitics, they are european Khasaris, who were made homeless by ww2. Does anyone in America seriously believe that the Koreans were going to invade, or that the Vietcong wanted to take over, or even that the Iraqui folks were going to attack the u.s.?
No, war is about profits for the corporations that supply the war machine, the soldiers, bless them, are supplying the labor that operates the machine.

This is so essential to remember. Like many American Jews, I am struggling to find the path in this morass - I support Israel, I abhor violence. I lived there. I lived on kibbutz just between Lebanon and the Golan Heights. I experienced daily - DAILY attacks on Israel from terrorists in Lebanon.
Did Israel pre-plan with Cheney (and the PNAC)? Perhaps. But perhaps not. Did Israel prepare well for what they knew was inevitable? Yes, most likely.
In my heart, I believe Israel will succomb to world pressure, and withdraw. They will cease fire. It is inevitable, and it will happen. And then the daily attacks on Israeli citizens will resume, and will go unnoticed by the world at large. It is amazing to me that when Jews kill, we are demonized; but when Jews are killed, it makes little news.
Nevertheless, the deaths of Lebanese citizens is horrific, and the bombing must stop - nothing can be accomplished by violence. Nothing at all, except additional violence.
Not only when it was planned, which is 3000 years ago, not 2000 AD, but the timing on the event.
School holidays, long summer days in the norther hemisphere, meaning Europe & the US, people planning their summer holidays or out in the park, general public apathy for Middle East televised Conflict and falling sympathy for 'arabs' whether Palestinian, Lebanese, Iraqi or Iranian, nevermind 'hezbollah'
Add to that that the US & Britain are occupying Iraq, and have an ongoing conflict in Aghanistan. And hey once you've got Britain & the US to do most of the bulk killing, Israel's destruction of Lebanon (is it episode II or III) just doesn't catch people's interest.
The thing is divide and conquer, there are so many arab factions and in fighting in Iraq, Palestine, and Lebanon, that other Arabic speaking countries such as Egypt are just unable to offer concrete military support.
Whereas Israel "the victim" oh yes, the victim, two Israeli soldiers kidnapped(?) - and they get the blessing from the rest of the world to destroy another country, its whole infrastructure and economy. They don't even have to claim it is the wrath of Israel's God visited on infidels.
Two Israeli soldiers 'kidnapped' is enough to justify air strikes and a ground offensive. I wouldn't want these dwarf brained people caught in a 3000 year old time warp, as neighbours, never mind as my close family. Shame on Them!
On a happier note, thanks foradding me tou your links. I'm just gonna pop back to mine and return the compliment by adding you to my sidebar.
quasar- whatever you like- i answer mostly to betmo. thanks- i like interesting blogs- and yours is that indeed.
i was going to comment to the comments and as i have had such a nice day- went with hubby on a dinner cruise on cayuga lake with his office- i think that i will just put up a post tomorrow to clear up a few things.
i did actually read the article- and my perspective is- preemptive strike was planned because hezbollah was amassing weapons of mass destruction. of course, i find that accurate in the rest of the paragraph:
"Of all of Israel's wars since 1948, this was the one for which Israel was most prepared," said Gerald Steinberg, professor of political science at Bar-Ilan University. "In a sense, the preparation began in May 2000, immediately after the Israeli withdrawal, when it became clear the international community was not going to prevent Hezbollah from stockpiling missiles and attacking Israel.
By 2004, the military campaign scheduled to last about three weeks that we're seeing now had already been blocked out and, in the last year or two, it's been simulated and rehearsed across the board."

the article also had this point:
