i have been reading as is my wont- and i ran across this at in the middle of america:
anti-religion: 21st century racism
now- my views on religion- especially christianity- are not news. i am against organized religion of any kind- but as long as you keep it to yourself we're cool. i tend to be a constitutionalist like that. then i ran across this post at rising hegemon that rebutted anything i might have said over at g's much more clearly.
fuck nuts of insanity

That really struck a cord with me. To excuse the fact that they are upset must be "because they're atheists"! What a crock!
Atheists mourn and want answers just like people who "have faith". If they were church-going Christians what would this moron have said?
Most atheists I know, myself included, believe in making life better now, not waiting for the rapture or heaven to make it all better. There is plenty to live for in the world around us.
I feel a rant coming on, so I will stop here or else I will blow a complete gasket.
Hmm, I'm "anti-religious" because I don't like fundamentalism? That's news to me. So, I'm a bigot because I ACCURATELY point out the damage religion has done to society? Maybe it would surprise "G" to know that I believe in a higher power and live in a family of Christians AND Muslims?
I believe in progress. Fundamentalist religion doesn't. I have yet to find any evidence that fundamentalism has contributed anything positive to society. By the way, it was humanists and liberal Christians who fought for an end to racism, not fundamentalists.
Betmo,
You know how I feel, and I said so on G's post.
I knew about the Tillman investigation when it happened, just sad.
Just because I don't believe; I have nothing to live for? I can't find happiness in life? I can't strive to be a good, honest, moral person? BULL CRAP !
Some of the nicest people I know are NOT religious. And some of the worst people I know, claim to be.
Hypocrites!
The "persecuted Christian" bullshit is out there as a manipulation tool for the weak-minded.
Anyone watching the Jesusistan agenda advance itself in this country knows thjat it is Jesusistan that aims to persecute the rest of us. I find it both amusing and sad that so many women (defined as "property of a man" in Jesusistan) buy into this bullshit.
And racism?!? You want to know about racism?!? Go check out the many ties that people like Tony Perkins have with "Christian" organizations that are basically a fresh coat of paint on the old KKK headquarters.
The Founders were mostly either leery of, or hostile to, Christianity, and it doesn't take a genius to figure out why. The modern-day Goppers are America's Hezbollah.
Any organization that stands in the way of truth, is suspect and I believe that is all the Tillman family wants - the truth. To lose a son is one thing, but to have his death wrapped in lies and deceit, is another. Let his death stand for the truth being wrung out of the sick mess called religious military fervor. Thanks for posting, Betmo
Church goers seem high and mighty because they believe in everything they do, they must. Hence, a sort of self confidence.
Most church goers, in the radio shows definition of high and misghty don't stand on their soap box and proclaim that they are best, come join.
It is only that they have found they're own answers.
The person who was peeved at that, i think, must have some certain points of issue in his/her life that makes him want to at ease, but they aren't.
Sappho - I challeng eyour statement becauseits a gross generalisation. "All" world evil is not linked to religion, I am an atheist, but c'mon think about what you are saying.
A dude robs a bank because of religion?
Many evils are influenced by differing beliefs - but ALL?
betmo... why didnt you post any comment about this on my blog about it? I did post it with the intent of a two sided discussion.
Now, to clarify, because most of you seem to have mistaken what I said to generalize all non-Christians and/or atheists as a buch of Christian bashers.
Not SO!
I was quoting specific things that people wrote on blogs and other outlets.
I then tried to show how I felt that the general attitude of those comments, and the mindset that would stand behind them was discrimintory.
If I say something stupid like: All aethiests are retarded and unable to understand a higher power, and then even further, acted on that crap assumption... you'd call me intolerant, biggoted, etc...
Yet these types of comments are regularly voiced in liberal circles about Christians, and never refuted by any except Christians... which in turn just generates more wrath.
If I'm wrong... if it's not discriminatory, and if this doesnt happen... PLEASE FOR ALL THAT IS GOOD show me a difference.
As I've said, I didnt generalize at all, I was VERY Specific about who I was pointing out, and the type of comments I was pointing too.
Those types of comments, if made about a specific race would have the majority of you up in arms... but suddenly now you want to explain it away as "stating facts"... You know, thats what the whites in the South used to say when they did it to black people too.
I'm not trying to play bleeding heart here, but I think a good many of you need to take a hard look at what you're feeling and why. If you dismiss me off as just one of "them" because I belive in God and Jesus... you've got the same sickness that you're supposedly championing against.
Note also, you guys can quit tyring to point back to Christian intolerance and racism/discrimination.
I know it's out there, this isnt a score card or a tit for tat deal.
If it's wrong, it's wrong, it's not about being fair and who does it more.
i posted this over at middle of america-
g- i initially didn't comment directly here because 1) i wanted to give others a chance to weigh in first and 2) we had just had a discussion on my blog about religion- with an emphasis on christianity. i don't disagree with you that there is much anti christian sentiment floating about these days. my take is that it has to do with all of the attempts to make christianity a state religion in america. it has to do with the religious folks pushing to amend the constitution for abortion, stem cells, flag burning, etc. if these politicians do not represent you then i do apologize. they say that they do so that is what i have to go on. i think it has to do with billy graham being named our 'national chaplain' and for the creationist agenda being pushed in schools even though there is no hard scientific facts behind it. i would say most folks are fairly tolerant unless stuff like this gets force fed to them- and then their panties get into a bunch. again, if you don't believe in what these folks are pushing and they aren't speaking for you- then do the right thing as a moderate and start speaking out against them in this country.
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
.....The above, from John Lennon, bless him, and his words, makes more sense than all the flag waving and bible bashing.
Religion and patriotic fervour are the two falsehoods that draw new recruits into perpetual battle.
