looks like more problems ahead for iraqis...

rising hegemon:

"A decade after the Pentagon declared a zero-tolerance policy for racist hate groups, recruiting shortfalls caused by the war in Iraq have allowed "large numbers of neo-Nazis and skinhead extremists" to infiltrate the military, according to a watchdog organization."

not to mention the mercenaries:

latin america
phillipines

If you have ever watched a special on these hate groups, you will see a prevailing military influence. Like our enemies abroad, our enemies at home will use any tatic to gain an upper hand. Now you can use the impending race war card to scare readers as the writer of article has done, but they are attempting to further discredit our troops in Iraq.
And if you think the jack booted storm troopers of Bush are scary ;), read about the Aryan Nation. You will shudder anytime you see someone with a teardrop tatoo.
Now for the really scary part, the military finds and convits these thugs, then they get dishonorable discharge, come home and are energized by their cause. Because the military that enlists illegal immigrants, Blacks, Gays, Catholics, Jews, Muslims and any other minority group they conjure up in their demented little minds, just gave them the shaft. They must now purge the country of these dirty people in the name of God.
Sleep well.

And that might well be why the 15 year old Iraqi girl was raped and killed. The military is taking anyone they can get to sign up.

What bothers me about the allegations made against our troops, is that these are just that, allegations. They have one so-called confession from a young man with a personality disorder. The whole scenario of this accusation about the rape and murder is incredulous to me. How can you determine a rape when the body is burned as this allegation suggests? And who is really responisble for all of the accusations against our troops? Wouldn't it be to the insurgenst advantage to demoralize our troops? And while we may not see it as a war, it is a war to the troops in Iraq. And while we expect themselves to conduct themselves beyond reproach, they are busy trying to stay alive.

As for the militia groups in this country, their main goal is to bring about the end of this government. Whoever the president is. As illustrated by the bombings of black churches a few years back, their goals are directed against us.

Geez... You have got to be kidding me Obob. The author is using this story to discredit our troops in Iraq? What a load of crock. It is well known that the American people support the troops, but not that war. All polling done has shown this. Anyway, it is against military rules to enlist openly homosexual recruits, but it's OK to admit people who are openly and violenty racist, right?

So Deb, you think it's OK to give the troops in Iraq the right to do whatever they want, and we just have to ra-ra about it back at home? Support the troops, no matter how many people they torture and kill in the name of "war." Right?

Sarah, prove to me that what these marines are accused of actually happened. Or perhaps you have an inside source, of course an anonymous source, that gives you information you are privy to, and we are not. One thing I can not understand is how can we support the troops, and not support the goals they are trying to achieve? We never hear about the Iraqi people they have helped, the schools, the hospitals, they have helped build. We never hear about the wounded Iraqi soldiers that are treated. If you knew anything about the military, you would understand what the chain of command means. Trust me, these troops serving in Iraq are not running amuk. Maybe you should go to Iraq and get a first hand view of whats going on. I would, but I would want a rifle, and M-16, so I could kill the son-of-a-bitch who made the IED device that took not only my son's foot, but his life. Don't tell me to ra-ra. And I am sick of the fence-sitters, who say "I support the troops but they are wrong." To me, that is a slap in the face to any of our troops serving there.

"Our troops" don't need some whackjob conspiracy theory to "discredit" them. Some of them seem to be doing a damn fine job of it all by themselves, along with the people who lead them. They don't need any help from us.

Since when does the military enlist openly gay people? Must've missed that memo. Since when do they take in undocumented folks? And aren't Jews and Catholics and even Muslim Americans all AMERICANS? And last time I checked, skinheads, neo-Nazis, militia group members and other socially impaired nincompoops don't need an excuse to carry out their hate-fuled idiocy.

And by the way, for those who are interested in facts, the rape/murder allegations come not just from the alleged perp with the psychological problems, but also from EYEWITNESS TESTIMONY from fellow "soldiers" who were there and from a surviving family member of the victim who saw the whole thing. The insurgents don't need to stir up rumors to "demorlaize" our troops: they just have to hit them again with more IEDs, while they're riding in under-armored vehicles without proper helmets or body armor, carrying out senseless missions while carrying out a FAILED policy in a PHONY war.

It's funny, but for folks who supposedly aren't hearing about all the "good things" our troops have done in iraq, some people seem to have a fairly long laundry list of accomplishments. So just how is it that we aren't "hearing" about these things? Folks like deb50 repeat them over and over again, but I guess they don't need "evidence" to support those claims. Post some of those accomplishments on ablog. I'd read them. We should give credit, where it's due.

And no, if the mission itself is evil, I do not support the troops as they carry out that mission. That does NOT mean I want them harmed. As a pacifist, I abhor war in all its forms and for all its supposed reasons.

I want them all home, where they belong.

The bigger slap in the face (and this is coming from a 10 year vet) is to have the troops used(misused) based on a lie. Not one drop of blood should have been shed in Iraq. Note the presidents more neutured stance towards N Korea. The never should have been there and they need to come home.

I have a close acquaintance who left the military because he says he is just a bunch of hoods now. I don't think they all are, but there are enough of them to tarnish the whole.

Well, quakerdave, as a pacifist, I can see where you would adopt your point of view. I guess I'm a little too close to this war, to be as deadfast convinced that everything going on pertaining to the war is wrong. And thanks for bringing tears to my eyes. Your need to be so definately right, has made me realize that no one cares about the families of the troops. No one wants to see the other side, they just want to prove someone else wrong. And, I dishonor my son, for even disclosing anything about his death in Iraq. For that I'm ashamed. Deeply ashamed. Don't worry, I've learned my lesson. I will not post here again. So hopefully, you will be able to discuss your ideas with those who offer no resistance, or alternate points of views.

are we supposed to be as good as the 'freedom fighters(terrorists)'? i thought that we were supposed to be better. no- i don't think that we should second guess every move our troops make- they are in combat. however, when fellow soldiers- and officers- tell of abuses and there is an actual investigation- well we need to hold those folks accountable. deb has said that we should not convict these folks without due process and i agree. the prosecutors seem to think that they have sufficient evidence based on eyewitness testiomonies of actual us soldiers- not just the iraqi locals- so we will see.

my original point was not to get into this area. my original point was- the soldiers are in danger from their own mates. here we are mixing these hate filled folks in with actual troops and it is setting up a recipe for disaster. now we are hiring mercenaries to be used as security forces. heads up folks- many in the phillipines and guam are- muslims. this does not make sense to me. i don't know much about mercenaries but i can't imagine that they are held to the same standards as actuall troops.

None of this would have happened - certainly not the loss of deb50's son - if our country had not been misled into this phony con-job of a war.

I have to be honest when I present my feelings. That is what they are. Mine. deb50 did not dishonor her son, and my words were too harsh and too strident, considering I either skipped the comment previous to my last one, or I did not read carefully enough to have seen what she wrote, or it appeared here after my comment was sent. I should've been more sensitive, considering I have suffered some losses as a result of this war, even though it wouldn't come close to what deb experienced. The deaths of former students can't come close to the death of a child. I have added to her grief, and that was wrong and inappropriate of me.

But... once again we have folks here who buy into the lie by turning our objection to this war into "support" for the terrorists and insurgents. That, too, is a lie. People can have objections to this war, and to this president's failed policies, and not be "traitors." This is the level that this regime has taken us to: it's Tailgunner Joe time all over again, except that this time, the White House has a cowtowed media, Fox "News," most of talk radio, and twits like Ann "Copycat" Coulter to spread the "you're with us or you're with the enemy" message."

That dawg wouldn't hunt.
