what is memorial day?
okay- i am thinking that most americans don't know what memorial day stands for. i would hazard a guess that many think that it is a long weekend that heralds in the start of summer. others celebrate this time of year along with college graduation parties. no- no that's not why we have a memorial day. memorial day is a day on which to pause and reflect and honor our soldiers who have died in battle. it is not a day to protest unrelated topics- or the war in iraq or wherever. it is not a day for revelry or fighting. i am going to be unpopular for this one too- it is not a day to have picnics and bbqs because you have an extra day off. people, the reason that you have an extra day off is precisely because these brave men and women gave their lives to keep you free. they died so that america could maintain it's constitution and freedoms. honor them by parking the suv at the local cemetery and placing a flower or moment of respect on a veteren's grave. thanks grandpa- pvt. sherwood houghtelling.

Very powerful post.
My father as many other vets, don't talk much about it.
Regards.
Well said Sister. Consider me one of the meatheads that -at times- has had a BBQ or 2 and forgotten to pay homage where it is due. The word "holiday" should not -by default- come to mean celebration in abandonment of joy, not in this case.
Thanks for this most spine-erecting post.
You go, girl.
couldnt agree with you more ... you'd think that with whats going on more people would stop and think about acctually thanking their soldiers ... i thank you for your post ...
my tattoo is of a tribal phoenix ... never down and out because it always rises from its ashes ... xmen is worth seeing on the big screen ... and da vinci code was pretty good ... i mean the book was better, but thats a given ... its fun to see the movie after you've already "saw it" in your head ...
p.s.
My mom just ripped me a new one for not going to a cementary yesterday.... man is she hot! Your posting was an epiphany, thanks again.
