sweet jesus i feel like oprah or doctor phil! no- relationships and procreation are hot topics for me after working in human services and trying to clean up other people's messes for so long. what a joy that was! trying to look objectively at a problem(ie your children being removed from your home due to you letting your boyfriend abuse them) and come up with the best solution(reunification from the law's perspective). only- the people involved in the problem don't see the problem because that is just life for them. that and i am white and educated- and 9 chances out of 10- they aren't educated. it was odd- for me here in upstate new york- i worked with mostly poor urban or rural whites. isn't it funny that they had the same problem as we see in the ghettos? usually single white mom with history of 1) bad taste in men, 2) substance abuse of some kind, 3) history of being abused herself, 4) 6 different kids by 6 different guys. maybe it isn't a race thing- maybe it's a class thing.
i find it provocative that maryann reid advocates starting within her own ethnic community. it's that trust thing, i guess.
