thanksgiving

as i was breaking bread for stuffing, i started to remember holidays from days gone by. that's what they are for fyi- they are for building memories. most of my holidays have a bittersweet feel to them because i have less left to look forward to than i have memories. holidays have always been closely tied to my mother- and some of my earliest memories (head's up annie) are spending time with mom in the kitchen preparing for holidays. sounds idyllic but trust me- other members of my family didn't always make them happy occasions. which is why- i have taken it upon myself to keep the holidays going for my mom. she isn't doing great these days and i don't know how many more i will have with her to look forward to- so i am remembering and enjoying the ones we have left. we peeled and cooked mashed potatoes yesterday for today's dinner- and it made her glad that she helped. i am thankful today- on the one day a year to be extra thankful- that i had this moment with her to add to my memories. the most precious gift that we have as people and as americans to give- is our time. we never seem to have enough of it. forget about gift cards or movies or clothes- time is the most precious commodity we have. we should give freely of it to the people we love. that's what is most important. happy thanksgiving. b

Happy Thanksgiving, Betmo. Treasure the memories, as they will sustain you when you enter old age.
