Seems to me though that in a country where water is scarce you would keep the cropsw on groung level as when you rase the bed it is harder to keep moist. What I use to do was during non gardening I would dig a hole not planted and throw all my vegetable scraps right in there. When filled I would dig a new one elsewhere spreading the wealth.
