going to be unpopular for this

i get annoyed by memorial day...not because i believe that we shouldn't respect the military folks- but because i believe that we should respect them while they are alive...and also we already have veteran's day but that's a different post...

i do not believe that we should memorialize and celebrate people dying in war...and with the exception of world war 2- there hasn't been a war since that was fought for america's protection...pre-emptive war does not count as protection...it's lives squandered for war profiteering...

and spare me the 'you don't understand' speeches- i have several uncles that have served from world war 2 on down...and one is a career navy officer who recently became a chaplain...i also have several close friends who served...

memorial day isn't about rah, rah, rah flag waving...that's what july 4th is for...it is solemn remembrance for those who gave their lives fighting for what they believed was right...i find it annoying that so many hijack that thought for political and financial gain...

we need to do away with memorial day by doing away with the senseless killing of our military personnel...period....

You know I am a Veteran. I served in the American war in Vietnam. Your post is not unpopular with me. I agree with every word.
I wonder what is going through people's minds when they wish me a Happy Memorial Day, or tell me to enjoy the day.
Having experienced war as a combat infantryman, I can tell you, there is a lot to memorialize. I don't know one person who has been through war, soldier, civilian, whatever, that doesn't memorialize every day of their life, unless, of course, we drown the sorrow with alcohol or drugs to make the reality of it a little more tolerable.
My reason for acknowledging Memorial Day is because that's the only day others might pay attention to this message that killing is a crazy notion.
Any kind of honor for anything or anybody should come from thebheart and come as it needs to come, not be told what to be sorry for or happy about by people that want to have a sale to make more money.
My Memorial Day is everyday, so is my Veterans Day. I live in hopes that the health and happiness of all people comes to us in some way shape or form every day of our existence.

Peace

I'm glad you asked, confused guy from the Getty photo gallery, because it's easier to explain by example. I'm talking about relatively unknown Cheap Air Force Ones actors who made two completely distinct lasting impressions. You probably don't know his or her name, and you probably didn't even realize it was the same actor in both roles, yet the performances stayed with you as two distinct, iconic roles, while the actor who played them has remained obscure.
