americanism

so, it has been awhile...but i feel compelled to comment on this because i have been hearing quite a bit of chatter on facebook about it- and, well, as usual i have an opinion...

here it goes- i get it...i understand that the military makes killing machines out of the soldiers we send to invade and conquer other countries- i understand the idea of dehumanizing victims in order to be able to kill them- yep, i totally 'get' the whole war thing...here's what i don't get- the rest of us...

i have been hearing around that it just isn't as big of a deal as abu ghraib- mainly because we are pulling out of afghanistan....not because of torture or anything else and i have been hearing from fellow americans that hey- it's ok because our troops are maligned by liberals and the media and the rest of the world- and hey, nobody had any outrage over mogadishu...

yep...

let me break it down for the folks who are sharing that one brain cell- the folks in afghanistan didn't do a damned thing to us- it wasn't the taliban who was blamed for the 9/11 planes it was al quaida- and while i realize that to you folks all muslims look the same- not so much...we invaded afghanistan to allegedly hunt down bin laden who was killed, i am pretty sure in pakistan, and we never left- and while i certainly don't support religious crazies of any stripe- the taliban is only guilty of killing and maiming and terrorizing the folks in afghanistan...

which brings me around to the pissing on folks you have just killed...if we cheer that- and lord knows we have since 2001- we just can't seem to get enough killing other folks in this country- and we support that on the grounds that they deserved it or we are protecting this country or whatever lame bullshit you can come up with- well, that doesn't make us one whit different than the folks we are slaughtering in the name of freedom does it?

apparently, americans are far too stupid to put that one together...we claim to be the best nation on this planet because we cherish our freedoms- we claim that we are better because we value our freedom and the lives of others and when we cheer and wave the flag at one of our own desecrating another person or torturing another person- well, that doesn't make us better- it makes us hypocritical...

other people around the globe don't dislike us because we are free- they dislike us because we hog up the world's resources and take what we want by force- and after doing that, we apparently piss on the people of the country we invaded...and at home we cheer and reward that behavior....that's why folks don't like us anymore...

hope that one brain cell didn't explode...

Bonjour Betmo,

No Western nation should have gone to Afghanistan, for any reason. The case 9/11 was right from the beginning a job for the secret service, kind of James-Bond-mission.

I have been in Afghanistan twice and I really liked those strange people. But they are stubbornly backward besides being ferocious warriors. So they should be left alone in their mountains.

The place has been called "the graveyard of empires" for hundreds of years and now, after Emperial England, Russia, the Soviet Union, the United States together with their NATO vassals are learning the same lesson.
