only the good fridays

what are these seniors doing wearing my shirts? :) don't forget to pop over to shelly's for only the good fridays...

enviro news

i have to agree: "i just wish people would wake up & realize that you can't take ANYthing at face value anymore. you've got to follow the money and fer gawds sakes do some research for yourself!"

big ag doesn't want to go quietly and are desperately trying to hold on to their profit margin- by hook or by crook.

also, i have written about fish a few times- i don't buy it. i don't eat it. the oceans are being overfished and the fish farms are breeding god knows what along with the fish. not to mention the pollution in the oceans. isn't it something that we really don't give a rat's ass? we still go out for surf and turf like it's no big deal?

yeah!

for those american kids who are illiterate- the lorax will be hitting the 3-d theaters in 2012! now, don't get me wrong- i love dr. seuss and the lorax is my absolute favorite story- it always has been even before i became an enviro nazi- but really- no one reads anymore? stories always lose something on the big screen. perhaps not seuss though- the grinch is fantastic.

ooh, ooh, i can answer this one!

what makes dogs blue?

"And the oversimplistic answer to this oversimplistic question has often been that Blue Dogs tend to represent marginal districts they could lose by toeing the party line."

my thought is that many of them come from conservative districts and probably swapped parties to get elected. or they could be gop operatives who switched parties to make inroads into the dem party- which seems to be working.
which means- they are toeing the party line. just not the party we elected them to.

mmm....

i have a dim view of 'law enforcement.' perhaps it's from watching too much cops and america's most wanted. i used to be a fan. but- then we got the patriot act and the military commissions act- and when you put that together with the 'stupidity' of racial profiling and overt racism and too much power in the police forces- you get para military mindsets with guns and equipment to match. hence, the uptick in the 'tase first ask questions later' mentality that has killed hundreds needlessly. anyhoo- as if i needed anymore reason to dislike police- here are a few links to stupidity:

officers suspended for running background checks- on the president

cops spin 'wheel of fortune' to decide who to arrest

cop assigned to predominately 'minority' section of boston calls gates 'banana eating jungle monkey'

and- completely unrelated- hillary clinton will probably run for president again which makes her middle eat policies even more irritating to me

it's true

the only thing in the garden remotely growing are the peas. the tomatoes may or may not flower- they got dumped on again yesterday with rain. i am keeping my fingers crossed for my potatoes. haven't seen any blight yet but some sun between rain drops would be nice.

take heed in the recession

manners trump in job search

if you thought we were f***ed before

well, here's a bit of news for ya...

the military- currently stationed right here on american soil for the first time in our history- spies on dissidents

our food supply is on shaky ground and we have strip malled and homogenized our way of life a wee too much

you really just need to read the article by gore vidal. he puts it out there stark and realistically.

have a laugh

at palin's expense. i have a feeling she'll be busy fundraising and talking racist smack to the adoring crowds of knuckledraggers.

good stuff

professor cole always has a good article. i would argue that we should add congress to that article as well. americans elected a democratic majority with a mandate to change things for the better. so far, it has been largely status quo and not so much change.

in another article, dave johnson argues fairly persuasively for pro-corporation. i take issue with his assumption that we, the people, made the corporate laws. we didn't. congress did- and since there is conflict of interest upon conflict of interest- well, you see the problem.

for someone who spoke about the end of cowboy diplomacy- obama and clinton sure are raising the hackles and keeping shit started where we don't need it to be. why are we going into colombia? i mean really. why are we continuing to heckle iran and russia? didn't we vote that guy out?

happy tuesday- and remember- your vote counts. really ;)

stories i didn't have the wherewithal to make posts

i got caught up a bit in the google reader today- hence the passing along of links. usually i leave that in the capable hands of my buddy carol :) i ran across these gems today in my travels and thought i'd share:

us citizens wrongly detained, deported by ice- gives me warm fuzzies what with the draconian bush era signing memos, patriot act, homeland security, etc. oh- and did i mention private prisons?

i guess israel is the 51st state. and here i thought it was puerto rico- i mean guam...

wanna keep tabs on the dems in congress? see who donates to them and why they vote the way that they do? now you can...

hey- there's a study that came out that i doubt will get much airplay here in america- land of the stupid and home of the ignorant- global warming is real. and, it's going to warm things up faster than the eggheads thought. nice.

and last but not least- american stock market regulators gently tap the brakes. haven't come to a full stop yet- but hey, we're slowing

update:

sweet jesus in a thong!!! i should not have mentioned guam...

intriguing

i agree with hitchens- and it isn't about religion

he got lucky- he's white with a british accent

thought i would put this out again

life's journey: something nice to do with plastic bags

i have a new etsy buddy who also has cool ways to reuse plastic bags. she and her twin sister make 'plarn' and she turns them into incredible pieces of fashion. check her out.

do you ever

check out the folks who 'follow' you? sometimes it's kind of interesting. other times- kinda scary. check it out sometime and follow the blogs or links back. don't say i didn't warn ya.

british newsy

i enjoy seeing non american news stories and since britain is our 'ally' in the 'war on terror,' and they write in english ;) i follow a few papers. here's a bit of the brit:

colic cure 'a step closer'- good news for those new parents i suppose. my mom was not impressed by my bout with it.

tamiflu creator rakes in lots of money- no kidding. i am paranoid enough to believe things are manufactured simply to make a profit these days. especially when no one knows the origin of said flu.

thinking of music sharing? think twice. seriously. the music industry has been making a profit since the invention of the phonograph. they almost always win.

life is about living

"When people are eating whole food, real food diets, obesity is not a problem."

indeed.

eat foods that aren't empty calories and you'll eat less of them. a cookie should be a cookie and ice cream should be ice cream. the key is and always has been- moderation. and moving. we don't have any real need to move as a culture. we hire everything done so we can watch tv or type away. that's a big reason i mow my own lawn and clean my own house.

i'll save the discussion of what's in our foods- our meats and veggies- and plastics- for another post.

questions of the day

1) why can't we simply pay our military folks more as a recruitment tool? wouldn't that draw the same types who get hired at blackwater?

2) how come we are still in the middle east? wasn't that bush's war(s)?

take heed and be careful

"Taking a new hard line that news articles should not turn up on search engines and Web sites without permission, The Associated Press said Thursday that it would add software to each article that shows what limits apply to the rights to use it, and that notifies The A.P. about how the article is used."

new york times

in the end

we 'conspiracy theorists' will be exonerated in the court of public opinion. or, we'll be arrested and tortured and thrown in prison for the rest of our lives. those of us who were lone voices here and there throughout the blogosphere were ridiculed and told we were crazy by our 'allies' and reviled and threatened by the right wing. it's why i don't mind indulging in a bit of 'i told you so' because obama and pelosi and reid- none are doing much- if anything- to overturn or repeal the cheney/rumsfeld era power grabs.

it's why i won't fight for this country anymore. i would certainly not put my life on the line in the name of american democracy. many folks in this country are in denial or they are simply ignorant and don't want to be bothered. after 8 years of complete rethuglican rule- you would think that they would know better. and still.... they listen to the right and give the left the benefit of the doubt. there is really not much left of the constitution but people are out there rah rahing as if nothing has been shredded. open your eyes and ears. unfortunately, apparently, it's already too late.

"Though it received very little press attention, it is not hyperbole to observe that this October 23 Memo was one of the most significant events in American politics in the last several decades, because it explicitly declared the U.S. Constitution -- the Bill of Rights -- inoperative inside the U.S., as applied to U.S. citizens. for the faithful

i know it's summer. i know readership is down all over the internets. i also know that there are certain issues folks should know about that are not getting the attention that they deserve amidst the media's orgy of distractions. the last administration is one of them. every admin pushes the envelope on constitutionality. it's why we are supposed to have separate but equal branches of government- not one party toadies for a unilateral executive. the last admin simply made its own laws in spite of the fact that we allegedly have a constitution.

and they got away with it.

only the good friday

for those who may not know- van morrison has re-released astral weeks and has toured to promote it. of course, this pick is from tupelo honey but hey, enjoy anyway :) it's from the astral weeks tour. don't forget to stop by shelly's for only the good friday too...

tupelo honey

You can take all the tea in china
Put it in a big brown bag for me
Sail right around the seven oceans
Drop it straight into the deep blue sea
Shes as sweet as tupelo honey
Shes an angel of the first degree
Shes as sweet as tupelo honey
Just like honey from the bee

You cant stop us on the road to freedom
You cant keep us cause our eyes can see
Men with insight, men in granite
Knights in armor bent on chivalry
Shes as sweet as tupelo honey
Shes an angel of the first degree
Shes as sweet as tupelo honey
Just like honey from the bee

You cant stop us on the road to freedom
You cant stop us cause our eyes can see
Men with insight, men in granite
Knights in armor intent on chivalry
Shes as sweet as tupelo honey
Shes an angel of the first degree
Shes as sweet as tupelo honey
Just like honey from the bee

You know shes alright
You know shes alright with me
Shes alright, shes alright (shes an angel)

You can take all the tea in china
Put it in a big brown bag for me
Sail it right around the seven oceans
Drop it smack dab in the middle of the deep blue sea
Because shes as sweet as tupelo honey
Shes an angel of the first degree
Shes as sweet as tupelo honey
Just like honey from the bee

Shes as sweet as tupelo honey
Shes an angel of the first degree
Shes as sweet as tupelo honey
Just like the honey, baby, from the bee
Shes my baby, you know shes alright.....

why must i always explain

Have to toe the line, I've got to make the most
Spent all the years going, from pillar to post
Now I'm standing on the outside and I'm waitin' in the rain
Tell me why must I always explain

Bared my soul to the crowd eh but oh what the cost
Most of them laughed out loud like nothing's been lost
There were hypocrites and parasites and people that drain
Tell me why must I always explain

Why, why must I always explain
Over and over, over again
It's just a job you know and it's no sweet lorraine
Tell me why must I always explain (alright)

Well I get up in the morning and I get my brief
I go out and stare at the world in complete disbelief
It's not righteous indignation that makes me complain
It's the fact that I always have to explain

I can't be everywhere at once, there's always somebody to see
And I never turned out to be the person that you wanted me to be
And I tell you who I am, time and time and time again
Tell me why must I always explain

Well it's out on the highway and it's on with the show
Always telling people things they're too lazy to know
It can make you crazy, yeah it can drive you insane
Tell me why must I always explain.

Godless Liberal Homo: My Contrarian Interpretation of President Obama's Softening Poll Numbers

i wasn't a john edwards supporter either. i supported dennis k. my dissatisfaction with obama does indeed come from the fact that his admin and the democratic congress are too far to the right for me. there has been lots of lip service and 'hearings' but so far- not much change. corporates and neo cons still hold sway. i see pretty much what i expected- simply a slowing of the erosion of civil liberties.

one of the world's longest lived 'democracies' has decided to come into the 21st century. whoo boy! first the american constitution and now the magna carta. rip democracy. who thinks these are good ideas?

I'm linguistically detaching myself from the some 5.5 million cohabitating couples in the U.S. whose relationships are, in the eyes of the law, and in the eyes of many Americans, less valuable than mine. And I'm lauded for it."

yeah- i read the article- that is precisely why you chose to get married. but you knew that.

here's a bit of educatin' for ya across the pond

professor gates had just arrived home from an airplane trip from china to find someone had tried to break into his home. he sets the bags down to hear a knock at the door and a police officer there. police officers here in america are not known for their professionality and are often arrogant and swaggering. not the stereotypical beat cop in the old movies. cue in an episode of cops sometime. professor gates showed not one but at least two forms of id while he was inside the house. why would he need to go outside? and why was the cop still hassling him?

no, we weren't there. but i have seen enough overt racism from white cops to black suspects over the years to see exactly what this was. there wasn't any reason for professor gates to be arrested- by the cop's own account he was never touched. being black and being angry was enough in america to get arrested. wouldn't have happened to a white professor from harvard. but brits are not known for racial equality now are they?

Tuesday, July 21, 2009

who are they trying to kid?

lewis black takes on gop stupidity around the health care reform um- whatever the fuck it is- debacle. maybe?

here's the reality- there isn't a thing wrong with everyone having access to basic, preventative health care. the reality is- most americans don't have insurance or hmo coverage or well, anything. we pay for everything out of pocket. we are the ones who don't qualify for medicaid or va benefits or medicare or anything. we pay our own co pays and office calls and glasses and tooth xrays. and we don't go unless we really have to.

the reality is- the red tape you have to wade through to get insurance coverage is a fucking nightmare. the reality is- you get denied coverage at the drop of a hat- you can be old, or sick, or they simply don't deem the procedure necessary. that's today. that's not government health care. in their world- perhaps they are correct with their wild spewings. but in the real world- the one with real people in it who give a damn about others and not just power and profit-- well, we see things a bit differently.

my tax dollars currently go somewhere. where- is unknown because my family is uncovered and my streets are full of pot holes and my taxes go up and away into the ether. probably to pay for mitch mcconnell's health care.

going out on a limb here

but i am guessing that none of the police or neighbors watch pbs. i immediately recognized professor gates.

heroes

it is tough to find a hero in the modern world. there are a whole lotta folks only out for themselves. it's sad. but pulling out the weeds- you do find flowers- and one person continues to stand for integrity, honesty, and true compassion:

jimmy carter.

thank you president carter- may you live to be 1,000.

move on

look- i am not heartless and i understand grief. but grief doesn't give anyone the right to wrongly hold and imprison innocent people. it doesn't make secret prisons and the military commissions act legal or right for a democracy. these prisons should be closed and the prisoners who are blatently innocent set free. the others should be tried legally in an american court of law.

9/11 families should not have a say in the closing of the prisons. they deserve justice but so do the innocents in guantanamo bay.

journalism and the lack thereof

glenn greenwald would no doubt dislike the accolades i give him- or perhaps me being a teeny, tiny blogger blip in the blogosphere he could care less- but his voice and the likes of amy goodman, jeremy scahill, jason leopold, josh marshall have been the clarion call for truth. he hits journalists and their 'celebrity' right where it hurts and he points out the corporate shills that they are.

it is no surprise that he manages to honor walter cronkite while he exposes the sycophants who will blather on the boob tube about his passing.

i think it's important to beat this horse

too many folks just shrug about torture and surveillance. i believe that it is important to know where things start; how they come about- and why they are still in play. it isn't rocket science to figure out that the obama admin wants some of those stolen powers- even cheney said as much during the campaign and after (not just about obama). what's good for politicians is usually never good for citizens. forewarned is forearmed about what is coming next. from what i can see- not much has changed and there is still real danger of cheney era (from way back in nixon's admin to now) acts and laws harming the lives of american citizens.

don't need many more reasons

to only eat what i grow

fuck sake. i haven't eaten tuna in over two years and i never buy seafood. ever. i have had it once or twice when we eat out but it's rare. not that the chicken and pork i have been purchasing at the supermarket is much better- but for the love of fuck- i cannot believe the sheer potency of the greed that permeates this planet.

no surprises there

couple this with everything else we know about the cheney/rumsfeld administration- and the list just keeps growing.

"Eighty-two percent of applicants who had "liberal affiliations" were rejected for summer internships, while only 13 percent with conservative affiliations were rejected for the same programs."

i didn't get that sticker

i got a magnet with 'obama/biden' that i put on my fridge so that all of the rethugs know i am not part of their ranks. unfortunately, i am not part of the dumbocrats ranks either- but i don't want to confuse the rethugs.

"I think I’ll start selling bumper stickers that say, “Don’t blame me, I voted for change.” You can put it over the sticker you already have that says, “Vote Obama for Change.”

meth infected homes

i never thought about this- but on top of all of the other housing issues- this sucks pretty bad.

'With meth lab seizures on the rise nationally for the first time since 2003, similar cases are playing out in several states, drawing attention to the problem of meth contamination, which can permeate drywall, carpets, insulation and air ducts, causing respiratory ailments and other health problems.'

trust me europeans

this would not be in your best interests. anyone who can toady to the likes of clinton AND bush- should not be running the whole european union. just sayin....

it's so true

cats do control humans

i hate to constantly be a downer

it seems like there hasn't been anything good happening in the world in forever. if you take a look at the world as a whole- there is much unrest and upheaval- even in countries who aren't actually committing violence against each other. the ruling elite must be a wee nervous over that. i haven't had all that much to say because i can't report on happy changes we were promised. if anything, the democrats are out to prove just how republican that they can be. if that doesn't prove that we have a one party ruling class- the rich and corporate- i don't know what will.

the secret government within a government bullshittery has been pervasive for years- cheney just took it to the max. he was, oddly enough, out in the open about it. when you have media chains like the washington post holding private, off the record 'access parties' to get healthcare industry together with politicians in a private home- you know america is over. the obama nsa is just as secret as the bush one. the obama homeland security is just as draconian. we haven't gotten rid of many of the cheney era laws and acts and whatnot when it comes to secrecy, and spying.

there were many folks, me included, who wanted to give the dems the benefit of the doubt. well, here we are with a dem majority 6 months later- and what do we have to show for it? we have heard plenty of excuses and seen minimal change. we aren't any more free and we haven't seen any change on the domestic or war front. most of us catch snippets of the 'news' so i don't have to cite every story- but there it is. i don't really give a rat's ass what malia or michelle obama is wearing or who sings at a celebrity's funeral. what i care about is that i get to keep my house; my family has decent, reliable health care and food, and that i get to pursue life, liberty and happiness.

so far, all of those seem to be non existent in america. i think we need to change our anthem- because we are not 'the land of the free and home of the brave' anymore.

Sunday, July 12, 2009

for any who still believe we have american values

a blog buddy of mine shared an article with me written by a conservative christian pastor, chuck baldwin. oddly enough, his rant sounds like many of mine- sans the christian bend.

"Our churches are no longer places of respite from the world: they are mirrors of it: the same dress; the same attitudes; the same carnality; the same spirit; the same stubbornness; the same pride. Churches are no longer bastions of truth: they are glorified social clubs or mere corporations, where Christianity is never allowed to interfere with business. Instead of being watchmen on the wall, our pastors are CEOs or, even worse, politicians. Popularity and personal ambition far outweigh commitment to truth and an independent mind."

indeed.

so, it comes as no surprise that glenn greenwald has been highly critical of the obama, pelosi, reid triumvirate because our 'ruling class' has been bought and paid for. and it isn't just the 'blue dogs' in congress. i really think that whole thing is stupidity. you are either republican or you aren't. but i digress....

i think what makes me most angry is how folks were so very marginalized by peers for standing against the patriot act, military commissions act, illegal wiretapping, etc., at the time these things were being implemented- and now, we are seeing that these acts were indeed for political reasons and not real security. and we are seeing that they insulated themselves against accountability.

but the real upset is that americans hate other americans. we aren't going to be able to live side by side in peace soon. so, it's food for thought.

"In the meantime, plant experts are warning gardeners to be on the lookout for the disease and to take quick action if it crops up. Tomato fruit will show firm, brown spots.

Spraying with fungicides can control late blight if begun before symptoms appear, but many plant experts recommend removing and destroying the plants instead to prevent spores from traveling."

some observations...

mary matalin is possibly one of the phoniest pundits there is- no matter what a rethug does- it's 'brilliant' or 'genius'.

'However, CNN Republican Strategist Mary Matalin said she thought the move was "really brilliant" on Palin's part, though she admitted she was surprised when she first heard the news.'

give me a break already. why not take on the sanford affair mary?

i agree with ed:

'Republican strategist and CNN contributor Ed Rollins said, to a certain extent, Palin's announcement makes her look "terribly inept."

"I think everyone is shocked by this, and I think to a certain extent everyone is going to assume there's another story. You don't just quit with a year and a half to go. You certainly don't do this as a stepping stone to run for president. You finish the job that you're in, and obviously she's not doing that," he said.

"I think people are going to be very suspicious because of the timing. You don't quit on the Friday of a three-day holiday. If you are going to do this, you think it through, you give a good speech," Rollins said.'

my thought upon reading this was- huh, must be something to those ethics charges after all...

perplexed as always

where does one go to find real news? i guess a better question is- is there any real news left out there? is anyone covering anything of substance these days? cnn isn't. i think that mark sanford is a scumbag- but his deal is with his wife and constituents. i haven't given a rat's ass about michael jackson since 'thriller'- 'bad' was, well, bad. everything that came after was abysmal. his best stuff was with the jackson 5 and his two solo albums 'off the wall' and 'thriller'. let's let him rest in peace-- and cover something vital.

like- oh, i don't know- why we are upping offensives in afghanistan or how pelosi is fucking us over with the health care bill or how everything i have seen over the past week has been happy sucking? granted, i don't travel much and puerto rico is a territory- but traveling from upstate to new york to puerto rico to florida- and seeing the exact same layouts for strip malls and the exact same companies in place of any sort of local culture- that's depressing.

the planet and this country is in a helluva pickle- and cnn's lead story is about american's whining over the fireworks displays getting cut and michael jackson's memorial. no surprise there i suppose. my inlaws think that obama is the one responsible for all of the stimulus funds in the trillions and my friend from high school complains about the rain and cool temps because she likes hot summers and plants flowers. sigh.

trip pics

we stayed at the el conquistador- in the middle section- we could only go up and down by tram. lovely but hot, humid and hazy. glad we took pics when we first got there because there was haze over everything after that.

only the good friday

haven't had any response from blogger yet- so hopefully, the blog doesn't get deleted. perhaps i should contact them again :) holy crap is it good to be home! haven't had much time online as yesterday was a bit of catchup and then hubby snagged the prime computer time. so, here i am. i am a bit of a homebody so this trip was a bit long for me. puerto rico is lovely- what i saw of it- and orlando is not. i am glad hubby got to visit his family though- the newest edition is pretty cute at two weeks old.

i really missed the cats and being home and it put many things into perspective for me (i'll bitch about the whole airport thing at another time) and i will be meditating on the next turn of my life's journey. in the meantime, i have to mow between raindrops and tame my garden a bit. i have no idea what's what out there but that's ok. more updates later- enjoy!
