landscaping tip

we have been in our house almost a year- and i love my yard. for the most part. i watch a lot of hgtv- love to see what other folks' houses look like and i see what the selling tips are- and so must have the sellers of our house. they flipped it- and aside from having the tile re-grouted- which is costing me money because they did such a shitty job- i am now ripping out all of their 'careful' landscaping.

if you are going to sell your home and intend to landscape- please don't put in euonymus fortunei. i know it's cheap and sounds good- low shrub that's good for hedges or just groundcover- but it's the most useless plant i have encountered-- and it's rather ugly. this is not my house- but it may as well be. these shrubs can apparently be pruned into shapes but i have googled and looked through page after page- and this is mostly what i see. it doesn't really do anything.

and, this plant is native to china and has shown to be invasive in at least connecticut- i am assuming that means it will be invasive elsewhere. useless and invasive. i have 4. they are getting ripped out and composted. and i hate killing living plants- but i really don't have any other good options. no one wants them and i have nowhere to put them. and i hate them. i am ripping them out to plant lettuce and spinach. both good ground covers and grow well in partial sun/partial shade. and i can eat them.

they haven't figured out

that just because you rename something- doesn't mean it isn't the same old, same old. diebold, blackwater, aig.... and now, the rethuglican party. sigh. the foundations and think tanks aren't working guys.

too pooped to post

whew! jim will be glad to know i got the fam's seed potatoes in the ground today- along with peppers, tomatoes and butt loads of squash. i started the seedlings at the beginning of april and i need to get them in the ground. i will work on my garden this weekend. :) the weather was a bit cooler today than the last two. global climate change deniers can kiss my big, fat, sweaty ass- and that's no lie. our average temp is supposed to be around 60 degrees. we have been in the upper 80 degrees range and today we were in the lower 70's. 'seasonable' has changed as have the hardiness zones for planting. let's just say that the last few years have been a learning curve for me :) and it ain't over yet.

this is the overview for my longterm plan- this summer, i have planted basic veggies- squash, beans, carrots, beets, onions, garlic, etc. and i intend to add an herb garden also- as i have not incorporated the herbs directly into the garden as i originally intended. next time. this year i ordered a half a hog from a local farmer and 6 chickens and a turkey from another. not certified organic- but home grown without pesticides and drugs. the certification process for organic is arduous and takes 7 years here in new york. my chicken farmer has only been around 5 years. but, he uses the same practices certified organics do- that's good enough for me. supporting local businesses and eating real food. the carnivore- i mean mr. betmo- won't go vegan. yet.......

the animals have to have time to grow- obviously- as they aren't pumped full of growth hormones, so i had to order in the spring. won't get them until late summer/fall. planning and more planning. next summer i will add berry bushes to my yard- blueberries, strawberries, blackberries- maybe raspberries we'll see. i am looking long term to grape vines and semi dwarf or dwarf apple trees too. make wine and vinegar- and eat the fruit. i love the arbor day foundation- their trees are inexpensive and they have a wealth of info on their web site. check it out.

now, i deserve a nice hot shower (an indulgement for me. i like my showers hot so the steam rolls off) and an early evening. enjoy. :)

not much time today

this week is going to be rough going. i have to clean and plant so, i won't be spending much time online. i do check my emails and comments regularly- but posting- well, i'll sum up the week so far:

swine flu- overhyped by media as a fear mongering tactic

pakistan is unfortunate and the latest poll finds that obama is liked but his policies are not.

rightwing- batshit crazy and getting worse. i am not sure we can do anything but brace for impact.

more when i get the chance ;)

touche`

quit arguing with douchebags that everyone hates- part 1

quit arguing with douchebags that everyone hates- part 2

i disagree that we should dismiss them out of hand though- the dhs report on right wing nutjobs is evidence of what i know is coming- rightwing nutjobs creating a civil war. they are domestic terrorists and they are the ones no one is going to protect us against.

quote of the day

comes from blue gal

"PS name one baby they've saved from abortion, idiot evangelicals. That Christian-slash-Republican teat you think you've been sucking on is actually Cheney's dick. The end."

no internets yesterday

the cable company was having fits- and it was warm and sunny- so, i mowed the yard. most folks didn't realize i mowed the yard-- because they couldn't hear me :) mowing is a good workout- very good cardio and works the arms, legs, shoulders and back. bet you didn't know that :) going to go to the fam's today and do it again. also, going to grid the garden so i can plant starting wednesday. i have a feeling we won't have any more frost.

'only the good friday'

whew! not easy coming up with good stuff today- not much good happening in america or the world right now. but i will refocus my direction and look for the good stuff in spite of the rightwing and media and the crazy secessionists in tex-ass :)

it is supposed to be warm here in upstate new york today- the sun is shining and it is a bit warmer. there are movements afoot throughout the country to grow your own food- and co-op farms to grow organic meats and dairy products- so perhaps some will eat better- and eat real foods for the first time. there isn't anything much better than picking a sun ripened tomato or green bean and eating that first bite. raw. nope. except maybe a good piece of chocolate. i ordered some homegrown chickens and a turkey- hubby is a carnivore of the first order and i will need to wean him down. so, eating real chicken for the first time in decades- will be a real treat.

of course, the downside is i have to wait. yep. real food takes longer than a trip to the grocery store to appear. the chickens i ordered- and the turkey and the pig- are all chicks and piglet at this time. so, a bit of planning and preparation and waiting will go into it this season. after that, shouldn't be a gap in food. today, i have plans to dig up the garden bed at the fam's and work compost into it. i will plant in a week or so after i harden off the seedlings i started. i can feel the sun on my back and the dirt in my fingernails now :)

for all of the bad stuff out there- i know that there are folks fighting against it. unlike peggy noonan, we have to face the ugliest of uglies and meet them head on. if we face our worst fears, we generally find out that they are not as insurmountable as they first appear. i don't want 'mysterious'- i want the truth. and i want to right wrongs. can't do that if you bury you head in the sand-- or organic garden.

'only the good fridays' started over at shelly's- take a peek over there- and thornie's. she usually has a friday post up too. please feel free to jump into the meme and feel free to put your link here in the comments- i'll link it in the post and give ya some technorati bumps if i can :)

update:

chameleon has a good friday post up over at everyday tarot and fjb has one up over at not much but all mine. do check them out- and thanks for making my day brighter :). oh, and an unlikely dark horse comes out of the chute- the future was yesterday :)

what do we stand for anymore? do we even know?

there have been innumerable assaults on the constitution- pretty much from its inception. the john adams contingent has not been pleased that 'the great unwashed' was given any say whatsoever in their own governance. those descendants we see today splashed all over fox noise, hate radio, state and local governments, tea parties, and now..... million militia marches. guess that's why they are stock piling all that ammo.

but i just don't know what to say about the torture issue. i have been a strident voice for years- pushing and pushing for people to realize that free societies take the risk of being 'less secure' in order to remain free. pushing for people to realize that we, the people, were losing the document that gave us our freedoms- legally- in america. and people were afraid. they were afraid of muslim extremists who may bomb our cities or unleash biological terror in 'the homeland.'

but the people were wrong. the terrorists lived amongst us- called themselves americans. and willfully and gleefully stripped civil liberties away at a rate unprecedented in our history. and always my question was- why? why are they doing this? when is enough money and power enough? and i didn't have a good, tangible answer. i still don't. the closest i get is simply- because they could.

because they knew going in what they wanted to do- they created 9/11 to shock america into swallowing their lines of bullshit about the country being vulnerable. they created the crisis in order to go into war mode- special presidential war powers indefinitely. they manufactured reasons to go to war with iraq and decimated and tortured people and ruined the lives of millions of people.

because they could.

torture is arguably the worst thing you can do to a person. it effects them physically- and mentally- and if they survive- it effects them for the rest of their lives. and their families and neighbors and fellow countrymen- and it does not work for information. and americans authorized this- and carried it out. now, i realize that we have been doing this for years- at the very least training operatives on how to carry it out. but these folks planned to torture other folks to send a message loud and clear- that they were in charge and that's it.

over the last 8 years or so, folks like me have been called traitors, conspiracy theorists, crazy, etc.- and while it generally came from the right, much came from the left too. folks simply didn't want to believe that fellow americans could carry out what bushco and the rubber stamp legislative and judicial branches did. this couldn't happen in america- we are the land of the free. but it did.

and i guess what my purpose in writing this post is- to say simply this- the people on the right are wrong. period. they are the traitors and the unpatriotic people. i don't consider them americans at all. the people on the left who have been complicit and who have gone along with the right- in the name of power or blackmail or whatever- and didn't stand up- same thing. there is nothing patriotic about stripping civil liberties away from a democratic republic in the name of security. there is nothing noble or patriotic or brave in advocating torturing another human being. these people are cowards.

for all of the grandstanding and pretending to give a damn about the founding fathers and the constitution- and apparently, the boston tea party- these folks have not actually read the documents. they didn't listen to saint ronnie about america being an example to the world- 'a shining city' and blah, blah, blah- we were set up as the beacon of hope to the world- and we have no right to the title. so, it is time to let the people who claim to be americans know- you aren't. the rest of us are going to have to grow a set- because if we want any semblance of the country we believed in- we are going to have to fight for it. the right is arming itself- and if you pooh pooh that off- well, you may end up in a detention facility right here in the us of a.

sorry shep- we do torture- did torture- probably still do torture. the next question is- will be hold onto our principles and hold folks accountable? or perhaps the better question is- do we have any principles left?

from the wtf? dept.

when bad ideas get worse

i am an environmentalist but this is arguably the stupidest thing i have ever heard in my life.

'Basically, the shower curtain slowly inflates around you while the shower’s running, in the end trapping and immobilizing the showerer. The idea, I’m guessing, is not so much to kill the un-eco showerer as to speed up said showerer, encouraging them to soap up and rinse off quickly before life is squeezed out of them.'

um- no thanks.

reality in another country

A Reluctant Mind: Robbed and broken

i got this post from a blog buddy of mine from europe. he sent it to me and the author of the post is from pakistan. the beauty of the internets.

how long do you suppose that

it is before paul krugman is 'disappeared?'

"Let’s say this slowly: the Bush administration wanted to use 9/11 as a pretext to invade Iraq, even though Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. So it tortured people to make them confess to the nonexistent link.

There’s a word for this: it’s evil."

there is a whole lotta wingnut anger out there- and the tea parties gave them an outlet. apparently, and i did not know this, wingnuts can read and write- although spelling is optional.

oh, the irony

no idea even where to begin with this one:

murder suspect seemed 'all american'

indeed.

ooh- this might be overload

i don't even know if folks read here anymore or not- but i am going to string this post along anyway. the whole world seems to have lost its mind. i am no expert- although i play one on tv (or is it the internets?)- but the more i take a hard look at things- the more i see the all white overlords in power getting really, really nervous. and the more they get nervous- the more i see the rights of individuals being snipped and clipped. after all, they do kind of have us by the balls.

i understand why folks feel a smidge relieved to not have bushco in the oval office and rethugs at the helm in congress- i mean those folks are batshit crazy and greedy to boot. but it doesn't mean that they aren't able to influence policy, etc. many are now lobbyists- and harry reid sees nothing wrong with congress critters being influenced by lobbyists. and i have a feeling some of the congress critters are being blackmailed and/or bullied by our surveillance- you know the warrantless eavesdropping that's still in place.

there is change happening in this country. i would be remiss if i didn't say that president obama has been changing things for the better- not nearly enough to restore any kind of democratic republic- but hey, congress shares in that blame. the other change i see- batshit crazies are gearing up to start another civil war. i don't think i am being melodramatic this time (although i do have a certain flare for it)- one only has to look at the epicenter of batshit craziness to see that. the tea parties only showed the underbelly of the movement that is at the heart of destroying this country- the white supremacist types who hate black folks, brown folks, leftist folks, non christian folks, catholic folks, jewish folks- no wait.... those are all ok- they believe in the same mythical god guy-- muslim folks.... the bigger problem are the folks in charge. i don't mean just washington- because the d.c. 'ethics' have 'trickled down' to the state and local goverments here in america. these are our neighbors- our fellow americans- who are closer to us than the easy-to-hate folks in faraway d.c.- and they are just as guilty of betraying our trust as the folks in d.c. and that's scary.

we can no longer hold on to our illusion of america- that everything is going to be ok. that we are going to be able to go back to our old lives of living the 'american dream' and believing that america is 'the land of the free and the home of the brave'- those words ring hollow. no, the reality cuts deeper- and as rod says 'the first cut is the deepest, baby, i know' the reality is that america as a democratic republic is over. take a look at the realities that the folks in power don't want you to see- bring them out into the light and examine them closely.

america is a greedy sucker of consumerism and unbridled friedman style capitalism that has rendered probably 3/4 of the rest of the world poverty stricken and stripped of their cultures and resources

america has stripped the civil liberties of its citizens and has been directly and indirectly responsible for stripping the rights of the citizens of other nations through backing coups and military dictatorships from chile to iraq to indonesia. it's history- google it.

america lies to its citizens and promotes jingoism, nationalism- and not just a little fascism- through propaganda and corporate owned media. flag waving and rah rah rallies- did i mention that america also does not allow its citizens to protest? nope. citizens must file a permit first and limit the amount and scale and scope all to within governmental parameters. uh huh. kind of defeats the purpose.

america spies on its people and others around the world. america also deploys troops within her borders to augment the military style swat teams and other 'special forces' used against her citizenry under the auspices of security and homeland security. and we stockpile that info to use it against folks we disagree with.

much hasn't changed in this country too- if you think that the voting and election system is any better- it's not. old folks in florida are being disnefranchised by the gop there- and arizona federal court dealt a death blow to democracy recently.

did i mention that america tortures folks? we have been teaching folks in other countries how to do it for years- and we decided to give it a whirl ourselves. but, hey, we are so used to outsourcing- it wasn't long before that was a better option. afterall, can't funnel money to your secret investments and accounts if you are paying yourself. but, luckily, the folks who designed the torture- and have been so pissed that they won't be able to use those techniques anymore- and the operatives who carried it out- have only a small chance of being prosecuted.

hate to be a downer on this lovely spring morning- but reality comes a'callin' and she is in a really bad mood. we cannot ignore this. i hate to say it- but war will come to america- on american soil- either in the form of another civil war or another revolution. i am inclined to think the former. americans could give two shits about their civil liberties but boy, do they love to hate each other.

about that torture stuff...

philip zelikow on the olc torture memos- h/t dusterella

"The underlying absurdity of the administration’s position can be summarized this way. Once you get to a substantive compliance analysis for “cruel, inhuman, and degrading” you get the position that the substantive standard is the same as it is in analogous U.S. constitutional law. So the OLC must argue, in effect, that the methods and the conditions of confinement in the CIA program could constitutionally be inflicted on American citizens in a county jail.

In other words, Americans in any town of this country could constitutionally be hung from the ceiling naked, sleep deprived, water-boarded, and all the rest — if the alleged national security justification was compelling. I did not believe our federal courts could reasonably be expected to agree with such a reading of the Constitution."

just me being snarky with my post

thought i'd chuckle a bit over the tea baggers and the genetically modified seeds assholes:

UncommonSense: Janeane Garofalo on the teabaggers: 'You can tell these type of right wingers anything and they'll believe it, except the truth'

it's tuesday

the south, slavery and secession

seems like some folks can't seem to get out of their rut. certain groups of folks naturally gravitate towards each other- they do say that 'birds of a feather...' well, apparently, i am not the only one who sees the batshit crazy rightwingers congregating at palin rallies and tea parties as something to be a wee concerned about. i guess i am not the only one who saw the last 40 years or so with the rightwing friedman disaster capitalism as a bad thing- most folks have had enough. the only folks who want the nightmare to continue are- naturally the wealthy- and their batshit crazy minions.

all you have to do is talk about non white folks in positions of power and mention the word 'gun' and they put 2 and 2 together and get 5. they aren't the sharpest tools in the shed.

anyhoo, in the wake of the tea parties (taxed enough already?) where hundreds of minions came out to take the place of their wealthy overlords (ala civil war style) to stand in the inclement weather and protest the top 5% of the wealthiest americans getting their tax brackets squeezed a bit- the odious dhs memo leaked out- and the entire south got a case of the vapors.

here's the reality:

most of the rightwing bullshittery is taking place- in the southern L as i call it- any of the incensed congress critters or governors- usually southern states

those are the folks routinely targeted by the rightwing evangelicals like robertson, parsley, hagee- and many are based in virginia and tex-ass. in fact, much bullshittery comes from tex-ass.

speaking of tex-ass- the whole secession movement is centering on tex-ass- but indeed, other states are opting for at least 'sovereignty' as if they don't have it now under a democratic, black president and they did under cheney. oh, right- dull blades.

the south seems to be the ones with the biggest issues regarding illegal immigration, but they also seem to be the ones who enjoy owning slaves. oh, sorry, migrant workers and nannies. and they do have an affinity for the idea of the confederate states of america. they never really seemed to move on from the civil war.

so, their panties are in a wad over getting booted out of power- by the democrats and by a black guy at that. they are scared to death at the fact that the 'waspish' nature of america is slipping away- more of us heathens hopping about coloring eggs than worshipping a myth these days. their disaster capitalism that fueled so much misery for the majority of the folks on the planet- america included- is on its way out as folks realize that regulation and humanity coupled with a somewhat free market and personal responsibility leads to a better way of life than unbridled profit over people. and now, they are in fight mode. they are drawing lines in the sand and hunkering down in their trenches. make no mistake- these folks could be construed as laughable.

but you don't need to know how to spell to shoot a gun.

these folks are arming and dangerous and dumb as rocks- hence, easily manipulated. let's think about that for a moment. these are our neighbors. just sayin'...

aipac and corrupt politicians

the two seem made for each other. i have no qualms about seeing dumbocrats behind bars anymore than rethugs. in fact, they can share cells.

privacy- not so much

the only way to even remotely be private these days- go off grid and hide without any modern trappings. and even then, someone can find you. scary but true. i gave up a long time ago because i didn't want a nervous breakdown thinking about it.

'only the good' friday

mmmm..... i have the windows opened and the front doors too to let in the sunshine and the fresh air. it feels lovely. i planted red daylilies this week but i have the task of sorting and replanting bulbs from my fam's house and here- in the fall. the nice lady who lived in the house at the fam's planted bulbs everywhere in every color- and they spring up wherever. i want to make some order- so, it looks like my fingernails will be dirty for months :)

the cats love sitting in the windows and watching the birds- mainly grackles at this point- and they chase each other and when it's naptime- they snore. :) life is good.

i know that i focus on the ugly sometimes- it is not my intention to depress- but inform. i have a feeling life will change for the better- but not necessarily the way we think we want it to :) patience is key. president obama-- is not dick cheney. if we look at the bigger picture and don't jump immediately on his shit- he eventually gets to where we want him to be. he just takes the circuitous route. patience.

check out 'only the good fridays' at thornie's place- she has her's up. keep your eyes peeled for others- and leave your link in the comments if you want.

i'm thinking

that the good folks in the rethug party are setting up a new civil war. secession, confederate month, etc. i had a feeling- and posted about it eons ago- that we would have another civil war. the two ends of the bell curve of stupid cannot co-exist. something about the same matter not being able to occupy the same space or some such star trek science.

and yet, we are supposed to take them seriously

h/t to blue gal for this gem. remember the 'moran' pic? these folks don't have clue one what they are protesting or why. and they just make themselves look crazier than shit house rats what with their secession talk and foaming at the mouth over right wing extremist groups. the minions may be the focal point- but i am watching the 'leaders' and they are the scary ones. they are making the attempt to be 'up to something' and since they do have a penchant for secrecy- and they do share brain cells with the likes of rove, et al- it's worth watching.

but not the rank and file. that much stupid gives me a rash.

update: h/t tengrain

love her

great depression cooking with clara- well, her dvd is out. trust me, buy a copy. mom loves hers.

yeah- what he said

the rude pundit- via my email. h/t to happy in nevada

"The Rude Pundit thinks it's generally a good thing when large groups of people come together for a cause, and, agree or disagree with the cause, getting people in the habit of protesting is ultimately positive for the nation. It gives us a more European feel, where citizens tend to actually give a shit about what their government is doing. Would that many of the people holding up signs yesterday had respected our antiwar marches back in 2003 and 2004, but, hey, water under a bridge built of bones, you know."

anyone got a definition of treason handy?

bachmann and her ilk, talking heads and radio hosts, and now perry and norris- i guess i am unsure of where the 1st amendment ends and treason begins. and i am too lazy to look it up. anyone?

how very milton friedmanesque

ahhh... unbridled capitalism. wealth, wealth, wealth. this particular story has less to do with arabism and more to do with greed. what struck me was the fact that this could be anyone anywhere on the planet- and it has all of the same elements- power, greed, wealth and complete disregard for the planet or the people. dubai happens to be a microcosm but if you look at the 'expats' nationalities and the 'worker' class nationalities- you can pretty much move the push pin anywhere on the global map. think about the administration we just got rid of- and their attitudes- pollution is fine; certain people mean less; torture is fine... and there are wealthy folks IN AMERICA who 'own' nannies. i don't know if there are words to express the way i feel about this.

tea parties and other right wing nonsense

well, i don't know if the tea partiers are widely held up as idiots- or if their parties were a success. i do know that apparently, i was partially correct in my assumption that the parties were a smoke screen for other agendas. rick perry of tex-ass used the platform to foment for.... secession. no, the tea parties were 'not what they seemed'- indeed, they were allegedly supposed to be to protest "taxation without representation" but um, all of those folks are represented. if they didn't get the rep they wanted, guess they should have worked harder to rig the elections.

dick armey's organization was the sponsor behind the tea parties. i don't think the original tea partiers in boston would have been thrilled with the idea of big corporate putting on the spread. but, i guess there were cool souvenirs to be had in the form of t-shirts, mugs, etc. at some of the venues. and since the right wing knuckleheads were having such a great time being incensed over the dhs report, i guess they didn't bother to read the memo about president obama's real tax proposal- the one that is mainly letting bush era tax cuts expire and the one where he is going to raise a lot of revenue by going after folks who don't pay their taxes. no, many of the actual tax law proposals are effecting big corporate- closing loopholes, etc. and most of the rest of us will see tax relief- but hey, i am pretty sure it has to go before congress anyway. so, they are overreacting for nothing at this point.

but it's all the libruls fault, right?

the stupid- it burns!

this is the rightwing in the nutshell- or should i say, teabag?

limbaugh's 10 dumbest remarks- and this is their fearless leader

caribou barbie's attorney general pick- very enlightened. is he related to limbaugh?

permit fail- the teabaggers neglected to realize that while they were screaming about being on the dhs report for crazy violent behaviour, they need to get a permit to protest and whatnot.

hope they are reaching for the stars...

and going up the ladder to get cheney, rummy and addington too... hell, throw in kissenger. he's in the mix too.

secessionists and tea bag tantrums

guess some folks want to be their own country. odd, how they are all 'red' states...

wow. just wow.

i'd love to see any of the 'talent' simon puts through here on idol do that.

over at the peace tree today

i posted over there about amazon's decision to discriminate against lgbt folks.

my buddy spadoman has an informative piece up about the crow creek ride and why it is necessary. america has a shameful history when it comes to the treatment of native americans. that shame and treatment continues today. take a peek at the article and feel free to comment there if you want. good tuesday :)

2009 world's most ethical companies

according to:

"Ninety-nine companies made it onto a list of the "world's most ethical companies" picked Monday by the Ethisphere Institute, a US based think tank."

read the whole list here

www.ethisphere.org/wme2009

even krugman is warning us

tea parties forever

"But here’s the thing: the G.O.P. looked as crazy 10 or 15 years ago as it does now. That didn’t stop Republicans from taking control of both Congress and the White House. And they could return to power if the Democrats stumble. So it behooves us to look closely at the state of what is, after all, one of our nation’s two great political parties."

that's why i keep hammering home that these folks never give up and they don't go away. and, apparently, they are crazy as shithouse rats. do not 'misunderestimate' them.

interesting idea

The Democracy Index: An Interview With Law Professor Heather Gerken | THE PEACE TREE

i would think it would go over pretty good in a capitalist country. competitive as we americans are.

good question

why do religious repubs stridently defend greed?

i am cynical enough to say it's because they are using religion- and its adherents- as a tool. a machiavellan means to an end.

self centered in grief

here's the thing americans apparently aren't able to do- think about more than one thing or person at a time. look, i am not insensitive to folks' grief- especially in light of senseless violence and tragedy. but, true to form, folks who live in this culture can't see the forest through the trees and seem intent to find a scapegoat to blame even if those folks are innocent.

case in point, the recent shooting here in binghamton- it isn't the shooter's family who is to blame for the death of 14 people. yet, you wouldn't know that. the city, together with an interfaith council (i won't even go there) planted a memorial garden with 14 flowers. not for the shooter- but for the shooter's family. well, that was an outrage- and someone ripped out one of the flowers. really classy. no ability to realize that the family had no more answers than the rest of us as to why the killer shot up the civic center. and not only do they grieve for their son, brother, etc. but they have to carry his burden of shame for killing innocent people. they will carry that forever.

and you rip out acknowledgment of that. whoever you are- you are sickening. i hope you feel proud and really good about yourself.

oh- and fyi- try and pronounce the name of the family who protested. i dare ya.

shock and awe continues- and not just in iraq

if you haven't read naomi klein's 'the shock doctrine,' i encourage you to do so. why? because the information contained in the book mirrors what we continue to see today. i don't believe that because barack obama was elected that our country is on the road to recovery- not because i don't wish it to be so- but because all of the players who held the reins of power are still out there. if you look to the 1970's history, you will see parallels between the juntas in south america and the beginnings of the same types of tactics here. same mentality- same tactics- actually same people involved then as now- cheney, rumsfeld, kissinger, .... instead of trying to cleanse america's mindset by electroshock- they used 'dumbing down' that everyone complains about; they used 'controlled chaos' (as named by el rushbo in his radio show); they used 9/11. this latest economic construct is also designed to shock us- and the hysterical glen beck talking about government controlled fema concentration camps--- well, when folks like me posted on them almost 2 years ago, we were denounced as conspiracy theorists. torture- america tortures. it is easy to see where we have been headed and how we narrowly staved off the whole enchilada. but, this is a 'work in progress' according to the right wing friedmanistas. their goal isn't just to be in power- it's to wipe any leftist thinking straight off the map.

even now, hannity, et al, are pushing 'individualism'- it's the new thing. why? klein does a better job of explaining why, but it's fairly intuitive- the same reason one has to still apply for a permit to protest. the same reason that these folks are still going after 'community organizers' like ACORN- they don't want folks to have 'solidarity.' the 'tea tantrums' (to quote andrew sullivan) are a smoke screen and distraction from the real reason that these 'parties' exist. they were the brainchild of a corporate over a year ago- and these folks indeed have lobbyist backing now. where else would they get those tea bags? these parties hide the fact that secessionists and strategizers are meeting to plan their next round of mischief.

make no mistake at all- these folks are not on the wane as the msm keeps trying to convince us. if anything, being behind the scenes and out of the limelight- makes them more dangerous. we underestimate them at our own peril.

even the gop

lost out on the stock market

how fun!

Constantly Amazed, Yet Never Surprised: Happy Oestre, Pagans!

gone but not forgotten

americans have been lead to believe that they voted the neocons and many, many rethugs out of office over the last 2 election cycles. but watching and reading the 'news' sources since november, space aliens would be hard pressed to know we had. whether it be the cable and network talking heads or the pages of the 'respected newspapers and magazines' it seems that the right still had the most air time. guess the corporate ceos didn't get the memo that the other party won.

gingrich- wants to run in 2012, and indeed, these days he is sounding as crazy as ever, so he may have a shot

santorum- shouldn't he be spending time with his quiverfull and not opining in a major newspaper?

"Santorum and his wife, Karen Garver Santorum, have six children: Elizabeth Anne (born 1991); Richard John ("Johnny"), Jr. (born 1993); Daniel James (born 1995); Sarah Maria (born 1998); Peter Kenneth (born 1999); and Patrick Francis (born 2001). In 1996, their son Gabriel Michael was born prematurely and lived for only two hours (a sonogram taken before Gabriel was born revealed that his posterior urethral valve was closed and that the prognosis for his survival was therefore poor). Karen Santorum wrote a book about the experience: Letters to Gabriel: The True Story of Gabriel Michael Santorum.[10] In it, she writes that the couple brought the deceased infant home from the hospital and introduced the dead child to their living children as "your brother Gabriel" and slept with the body overnight before returning it to the hospital. The anecdote was also written about by Michael Sokolove in a 2005 New York Times Magazine story on Santorum.[11] Karen is also the author of a book on etiquette for children."

oh- then there's rove- he's a 'roving reporter' for faux news- wonder if he's going to make it to the reunion? looks like cheney isn't going to bring the desert.

video promo for bush library here

while many bushies remain unemployed, the more well connected have gone to work for.... the corporate media propaganda machine. or universities.

little wonder that americans are puzzled- it led to a caller to c-span to come right out and ask:

CALLER: "I would like to know why, if you had a car, ma’am, and it broke down and you took it to your dealer and it kept breaking down, and breaking down. Wouldn’t you change dealers? Why do you keep bringing these neocons on? […] This failed! …And you keep on bringing on failed policy. […] I would like you to tell me why we are still using this car dealer who has failed America."

and that is a fine, fine question indeed.

'only the good' friday

i don't 'celebrate' easter- or oestre as i like to think of it. i do like the idea of the spring equinox and celebrating spring and fertility and all that. and my sister did get me a wee bit of candy and i her :) but we don't do eggs and ham- green or plain. the weather is not cooperating with my outside plans but i intend to get outside this weekend for a bit anyway. i must treat the lawn with milky spore to get rid of the japanese beetles. i am also going to plant rue with my roses this year to help deter- and eventually add garlic to the mix.

ooh- and hubby will help me put together the lightweight reel mower i purchased at a great price for the fam's yard. they don't have much of a yard to start- and most of the backyard will be given over to the veggie and flower garden- so- i bought a reel mower. the motered mower is not in the best of shape- rusted and whatnot as the garage leaks.

today, on this good friday, i baked bread for the fam and watered all of my plants. i planted some squash seeds to sprout (don't know if the seeds are any good so i am sprouting in advance of planting.) and worked out. i intend to visit mom today and pick up some pics i ordered online. full day. :) had a nice dinner out with the hubster last night, so, it has been a good couple of days.

back to you guys to do your own 'good friday' post :)

fyi

head over to tengrain's for info on 'blog against theocracy'- it starts tomorrow and feel free to participate. links and info over at mock, paper, scissors.

also blue gal's

who lotta thinkin' goin' on

i would ask forgiveness from jerry lee- but he's a bit of a dick- so i won't :) my partner in crime- mom- put me onto the current thought trail i am on. putting more pieces together like an intrepid nancy drew- without much to go on other than msm pieces and alternative news sources. there was a time a few years ago when folks dismissed my posts out of hand- as doom and gloom and 'conspiracy theories'- posts about the erosion of civil liberties, an economic crash, drought and famine. well.......

i am willing to let bygones be bygones. as new pieces trickle out of the government- only the ones allowed out mind- we can put more pieces together. and based on international investigative journalism paired with a few brave souls here in america- and a new administration where it seems a few folks have some integrity- at least in doj-i am beginning to get a clearer picture.

here's my theory- as it has always been- 9/11 was a mix of domestic and foreign terrorism. and indeed, saudis were involved- maybe even from the bin laden family who knows? from what i can pull together from various accounts- the bushes were used for their connections since the beginning of the 20th century until now. oil is king and entire world governments, now run by the international corporate conglomerates, are headed by 'elected' mafiosos who funnel money for oil into the saudi coffers. but hey, you don't have to take my word for it. it seems like a bad mix of friedman 'trickle down' capitalism and mafia money laundering. it explains much about the stories coming out now and the way our whole way of life has been largely a facade.

uh huh

i guess rod parsley and pat robertson and the rest- need new clothes, homes, planes, etc. wouldn't want to deprive them of that. i mean i guess i don't understand what 'avoiding abusive activity' means to the irs. guess that they want these folks to pay the taxes that aren't exempt. my idea of non abusive activities would be not to shill every 30 seconds for a donation- which clearly goes to the above named expenditures.

"It is not necessary to hope in order to persevere."

originally, i thought that i would do a piece on monsanto and genetically modified seeds. they are, imo, simply evil and lacking any sense of morals or ethics- they force farmers worldwide to use their seeds and buy only their seeds- and the seeds don't work. if you don't go along with them, they basically destroy you. but then i thought better of it.

because the problem is so very much bigger. i have been giving some thought as to what american culture is; what the american way of life is; what the 'american dream' is- and i really don't know that we have one that is real. isn't that what we all are grappling with- the fact and reality that 'our way of life' was one big credit card induced fantasy? probably so. but it's easy to throw out the bad stuff and not as easy to really examine what being american really means. we are proud- or we were proud- to be americans and i have a feeling that's really all we know. americans tend to be an incurious lot as a whole.

but i put a bit of time into my thoughts and opinions and came up with- we are a culture of ideas. whether they be right ones or wrong ones- we have them. it has always been our idea that we live in a free democracy and were able to work hard and do better than the previous generation. our idea was that we were always the land of opportunity and betterment and that we were a safe haven for the world's beleagured and mistreated. we were the world's champion of the underdogs. of course, then we got fairly prosperous as a whole and stopped having ideas. we decided to feel rather than think- be hedonistic rather than introspective- and we got lost. chris rock puts it pretty much in perspective:

"The number one reason people hate America: the number one reason is because of our religion. Americans worship money, we worship money. Separate God from school, separate God from work, separate God from government, but on your money it says in God we trust. All my life I've been looking for God, and He's right in my pocket. Americans worship money, and we all go to the same church, the church of ATM. Everywhere you look there's a new branch popping up … remind you about how much money you got and how much money you don't got. And if you got less than twenty dollars, the machine won't even talk to you. The machine is like, "You better go see a teller." You ever go to a teller and try to take out eight dollars and fifty cents? Oh, it's disgusting … oh man, you gotta wait on that long ass line, people doing real transactions in front of you, you get on to the fucking front, you fill out your form, eight fifty. The fucking teller looks at it, she look at you, she looks at the check, she don't even take the money out of the drawer, she take it out of her pocket, "Here you go, get outta here." And here's something, man. Drugs are illegal, but ATM machines are open twenty-four hours a day. Twenty-four hours a day. For who? Who the fuck is it open for? Have you ever taken out three hundred dollars at four o'clock in the morning for something positive? Shit, when you press that machine at four o'clock in the morning, I think a psychiatrist should pop up on the screen and go, "Come on, man, save your money, man. Don't buy drugs, buy some rims. They spinning, nigga, they spinning, they spinning, nigga, they spinning." Americans worship money. Shit, you know why banks are closed on Sunday? 'Cause if they wasn't, church would be empty."

i watched bill black on bill moyers and what he said struck me- he said that this whole issue we are having with the economy is- well:

BILL MOYERS: "Yeah, and this week in New York, at this conference, you described this as more than a financial crisis. You called it a moral crisis.

WILLIAM K. BLACK: Yes.

BILL MOYERS: Why?

WILLIAM K. BLACK: Because it is a fundamental lack of integrity. But also because, if you look back at crises, an economist who is also a presidential appointee, as a regulator in the Savings and Loan industry, right here in New York, Larry White, wrote a book about the Savings and Loan crisis. And he said, you know, one of the most interesting questions is why so few people engaged in fraud? Because objectively, you could have gotten away with it. But only about ten percent of the CEOs, engaged in fraud. So, 90 percent of them were restrained by ethics and integrity. So, far more than law or by F.B.I. agents, it's our integrity that often prevents the greatest abuses. And what we had in this crisis, instead of the Savings and Loan, is the most elite institutions in America engaging or facilitating fraud. "

and the enormity of that hit me. our entire system is broken. every day i read the news and i see corruption oozing out of every facet of our system- drug and food recalls; people dying from shoddy healthcare or no healthcare; bloated education system based solely on testing, etc., and people firmly plugged into that system- with little choice not to be.

i also watched amy goodman and glenn greenwald on bill moyers- the last great journalist, imo- and listening to them i felt the enormity of broken system. the establishment exists to protect and perpetuate itself:

GLENN GREENWALD: Well, what I think is interesting is to look at what journalists, establishment journalists, who work in the largest corporations in the country, in the media division, say about what their role is. In order to understand how the reporting on Iraq was done. How it's done on the financial crisis. Last month Howard Fineman, the "Newsweek" reporter, and MSNBC contributor, wrote an article in which a column, in which he said that the establishment is now worried that Barack Obama is not up to the job. And he made clear that he was speaking on behalf of the establishment, as a member of it. And he said that the establishment, to the extent it exists in America, is now comprised of three stools. The financiers on Wall Street, political elites in Washington, and media stars in the New York/Washington corridor. And there's a "Newsweek" cover story by Evan Thomas, who's a long time Washington insider reporter. And it's concerning Paul Krugman's status as a critic of Obama from the Left. And in this article Evan Thomas, I thought quite revealingly declared himself, as well, like Howard Fineman did, to be a member of the establishment persuasion, as he called it. And what he said was that, by definition, members of the establishment are devoted to preserving the existing order. The prevailing status quo. Keeping things the way they are.

the fact that the politicians and the bankers and the corporates and the media are all working together to perpetuate an unethical, immoral, greed and wealth driven system on the backs of decent people around the globe angers me like nothing else. and i know that i am not the only one:

chris hedges- resist or become serfs

joe bageant- we have let corporations and the media rob our souls- let's do something about it

washington post reporters call george will out for lying on climate crisis

this economic disaster did not happen overnight- it was a well planned, system wide looting of our monies into the pockets of the very people who are now pocketing our money again in the form of bailouts. we got double dipped and that's for sure. probably triple and quadruple dipped.

make no mistake, there are many everyday americans who don't believe as i do- that every human being deserves basic necessities of life- water, food, clothing, shelter, and imo, healthcare. many folks right now are going about their lives with nary a thought of the suffering going on around the globe- and here in this country- brought on by 'our way of life.' but if and when the shit hits the fan for them- they will be the first ones in line for a handout- from neighbor, family, or government. because we have lived the life of plenty for so long and lost skill sets to help us get through the bad times.

president obama ran on 'hope and change'- those were the two themes throughout his campaign and i really believe he meant it. i don't know that that is what we need. oh, the change definitely- but the hope is that we will stabilize and folks can go back to their old lives. our way of life is gone forever. the houses with the white picket fences and the dog and the 2 kids- well, it was a bit of 1950's tv schtick. the thoughts in my head are far too many for me to keep writing in the post- but it is food for thought.

the world is a scary place to be

and so is america. here are some of the stories that make it into the google reader:

madness verus doom- cramer versus roubini on the economy. roubini has a better track record.

nazi crap at gun shows- but that's not why (or maybe it is) the gun show aficionados are scared.

this has the fundies' panties in a wad i am sure- obama: 'america not a christian nation'

heads up

in addition to 'shadow government' we have 'shadow inventory'- think we'll ever have anything on the up and up ever again?

'A vast "shadow inventory" of foreclosed homes that banks are holding off the market could wreak havoc with the already battered real estate sector, industry observers say.

Lenders nationwide are sitting on hundreds of thousands of foreclosed homes that they have not resold or listed for sale, according to numerous data sources. And foreclosures, which banks unload at fire-sale prices, are a major factor driving home values down.'

human dignity

apparently, isn't worth anything in the 21st century. anywhere. are there any shreds left?

please go over

and give brother tim some love- he lost a special family member.

no real answer

i should go on record as saying that i support the second amendment wholeheartedly. yep. i have never owned a gun but i recognize the need for one as recognized by the founding fathers- and by the simple virtue that i may need to arm myself against my neighbors one of these days. i don't personally see the need for citizens to have uzis and ak 47s myself, but freedom comes with risks. in the wake of the mass murders over the last month- and indeed, the last decade or so- there has been increased talk of gun control and stricter regulation.

my personal thought- we should start enforcing the anti-terrorism and treason laws first. throwing red meat to ravenous, crazy beasts- cause the predictable reactions. of course, faux news and the rightwing nutjobs don't explain every shooting- in an alleged free society, we take risks. unfortunately, sometimes things end badly.

michael steele getting the last laugh?

rethugs tearing up the limp-ball

methinks hannity may be taking over the crown of rethug leader soon

plus, specter likes him

i am mulling a post

glenn greenwald and amy goodman on bill moyers

bill black on bill moyers

take a look if you dare- it's on the economy

at the tree today also

the peace tree

gonna go a'mowin'

i debated as to whether i should lump all of these links together or try to string them along and put them together in an actual post. lumping won out. my reel mower came a few minutes ago and i want to put it together:) and no, i am not crazy. for probably the last 15 years, i have stored excess energy in my fat cells- and it has sat there lurking and waiting for the time to be used. well, now is the time. i have an old fashioned reel mower for my home and i bought a lighter weight modern one for the fam's house. so, i will post the links with a comment or two- and then, i am off to put together my mower.

global climate crisis is real. we are looking at droughts, ice melting and breaking off, and food and water shortages. just sayin'... anyhoo, here is some info on what's happening and what you can do

foraging makes a comeback- yep, if you can't or won't grow your own- perhaps this option is for you.

i am not crazy apparently- more regular folks are turning into 'survivalists' these days.

the middle class is falling fast- and becoming homeless as well as jobless at an alarming rate- while whole communities print their own money ala pre-constitutional convention days of old.

folks need to get a whole lot more creative- and grow a spine for what's coming next. americans are so very passive and laid back- except the ones driving on our highways. if we don't get a clue and a backbone soon, well, it's pretty much a wrap.

i posted on 'fusion centers' a week or so ago. i believe i said at the time that we will never know the extent of the civil liberties we truly lost under bushco never to see again. well, you will be pleased to know that black folks have made the list of 'terror suspects' in america. i know, i know, you are shocked to the core- but it's true. along with that revelation, no surprise that medical personnel working with the cia in the rendition secret prisons violated medical ethics and joined right in on the torture of suspects. there isn't any ethic or moral that americans won't violate for personal gain.

speaking of violating morals and ethics, christians are again the subject of a news expose- this time in newsweek. the article goes on to say that the polls suggest a decline in the number of folks declaring themselves christians, but don't worry, christianity won't go away. no sirreee... apparently, people need religion too much for it to go away completely. uh huh.

chris rock on hbo- his take on drugs- profanity abounds so beware

the more things don't change

the more things stay the same... for all of the hype that the obama campaign and candidate generated- apparently, not much has changed in the grander scheme of things. some things have for the better- mostly though, status quo. we still have 2 wars; we still have the foxes in charge of the economic henhouse; the blue dogs and rethugs and pelosi and reid are still around obstructing and stalling- and the rank and file are still bitterly polarized.

i don't really have any more in me to fight this fight anymore. i guess i don't see anything to fight for. we have come to the end and most americans are too mmmm.... let me quote an email i sent to a friend.....

"americans are the most self centered, intellectually and emotionally stunted, deliberately ignorant, arrogant cultures on the planet."

so, please, explain to me why i would give anymore of me to save them. all of the recent killing sprees have been by americans citizens- not foreign terrorists. and yet, we blame immigrants for all of the ills befalling this country. i live here in this country but i don't consider myself a woman with a country. this country does not reflect who i am or what i am about. and quite frankly, this collapse is probably one of the best things to happen to tear down the sham and facade that has been american culture. none of it's real or based remotely on day to day life. watching a variety of shows, i am embarrassed and ashamed of people who call themselves americans- especially when watching them travel to other countries. americans don't see the need to bother to learn anything about anyone else but themselves. and boy, wasn't this a slap in the face to realize that we are not the greatest nation on the planet- we don't even rank in the top ten.

as for my self imposed moratorium on criticizing the new administration until the 100 days are up- i will say that whatever happens will happen. there are many balls in the air right now and homey b better learn how to juggle better real fast. america as the original founders envisioned it is gone forever- if it ever really existed in the first place. for me, not being an obama fanatic, i simply felt a sense of relief that bushco was gone and that mccain and the wasilla trailer park trash didn't 'win.' i don't know if i ever really expected any more than obama to be a transition to whatever was next. and to that end- fyi- ice shelf broke off recently.

anything else is simply a distraction.

blog against theocracy

easter weekend is traditionally the weekend that hosts 'blog against theocracy.' tengrain and blue gal have set up the blog where you can find out more info. also, americans united for the separation of church and state has good ideas.

here's a good reason to keep religion separate from the government- but there are many:

fyi

i have got green? new york started as part of the poetryman's network. my itinerary thus far runs something like this- tuesdays at the peace tree; thursdays at the sirens chronicles and suzie q's; fridays- 'only the good'- and the rest of the time i will try to keep up with here, betmo's corner and poets4peace. feel free to drop by any of those spots if i am not here. they have other topics and good writers and hey, there are more of them than me :)

sunday afternoon

going to spend some time with my yarn today. i have several projects in the works and i need to start working on a few. i finished 3 projects over the last couple of months- i like to keep the projects small so i can try new things. what i have on the agenda now- research eco friendly, natural yarns and a place to sell my wares. currently researching etsy. it seems to be easier than trying to get my own crap going. hopefully, the weather will break soon and i will be splitting my time in and out.

for those keeping up with information on the binghamton shooting- press conference was held today at noon. i guess that's going to be standard for a bit. enjoy the weekend.

latest press conference binghamton

feed here at press connects

that's what i keep trying to tell folks

taking rethug threats more seriously

they really plan on taking back the reins of power in 2010. otherwise, they won't be able to rescind what obama and the dems have done. that's right from the horse's ass- i mean the horse's mouth- hannity and limbaugh- so you know it's fact. until then, they plan to obstruct, obstruct, obstruct- and will vote 'nay' on everything on party lines. just giving you the head's up.

waxing nostalgic

michael stickings over at the reaction has crowded house's 'don't dream it's over' up over there today. love that song. love it. my other favorite song of all time is foreigner's 'i want to know what love is'- since i first heard it----- love it!!! here's the original video and one from a live concert done in 2002. i like the original better- but it's because of the memories :)

I gotta take a little time
A little time to think things over
I better read between the lines
In case I need it when I'm older

Now this mountain I must climb
Feels like a world upon my shoulders
Through the clouds I see love shine
It keeps me warm as life grows colder

In my life there's been heartache and pain
I don't know if I can face it again
Can't stop now, I've traveled so far
To change this lonely life

I wanna know what love is
I want you to show me
I wanna feel what love is
I know you can show me

I'm gonna take a little time
A little time to look around me
I've got nowhere left to hide
It looks like love has finally found me

In my life there's been heartache and pain
I don't know if I can face it again
I can't stop now, I've traveled so far
To change this lonely life

I wanna know what love is
I want you to show me
I wanna feel what love is
I know you can show me

I wanna know what love is
I want you to show me
And I wanna feel, I want to feel what love is
And I know, I know you can show me

Let's talk about love
I wanna know what love is, the love that you feel inside
I want you to show me, and I'm feeling so much love
I wanna feel what love is, no, you just cannot hide
I know you can show me, yeah

I wanna know what love is, lets talk about love
I want you to show me, I wanna feel it too
I wanna feel what love is, I want to feel it too
And I know and I know, I know you can show me
Show me love is real, yeah
I wanna know what love is...

my contempt

is immeasurable. how is this 'better' than islam again? story with pics here

new website for me

yep. as if you didn't have enough of me to go 'round :) i am teaming up with my buddy the poetryman- who runs the peace tree amongst his other fine blogs. he came up with a plan to bring together the folks who write at the peace tree- as a sort of 'green network,' and he started his own green site- got green? so, that's what i called mine too. the difference is where they are located. they say that all politics is local- so are green movements. they literally start in our own backyards. pm is located in arkansas and i am in new york- if you want to jump in and jump on the green wagon- let me or pm know and we will link you up in a heartbeat.

i decided that this would help me to connect more with my community and also take advantage of resources right here in my neck of the woods- to help me in my own backyard.

update in binghamton

the local news seems shaken to the core and i don't really think that they know whether to shit or go blind. here's all i know-

press and sun bulletin

apparently, the guy's name is an alias so i have a feeling it's going to be awhile before folks piece things together. 14 people dead and 4 wounded.

addendum:

binghamton is about 3 1/2 hours or so from albany in one direction and nyc in the other. we have a large immigrant population- eastern european folks, vietnamese folks, various spanish speaking folks, african and caribbean folks- we are a mini melting pot. we also have lots of upstate white hicks. i am hoping that there isn't a backlash against asian folks in our community based on this tragedy. in fact, i am worried about the apartment building i just sold- the gentleman and his family are chinese. the bigoted asshats on my former block won't differentiate ethnicities. fingers crossed for him.

also, the news talking heads are fucking up just about any fact that they can- please feel free to email me or leave me a comment if you want any clarifications. they don't bother to find out anything about the areas they cover- and they get facts wrong. fox was particularly odious- with neil cavuto.

breaking news

proof positive that this can happen anywhere- and seriously, i have always said that it's my neighbors i fear most

gunman with high powered rifle takes over american civic association- binghamton, ny

my mother heard the sirens this morning- that's how close this is to my family. they are safe but there are at least 4 confirmed dead and wounded have been taken to area hospitals. that's all i know as of 1pm est.

'only the good fridays'

so, today, hubby and i are going to go and sign away the apartment where we lived from 1996-2008. i couldn't be happier. i have many pleasant memories of that apartment building but the last couple of years or so had been a bit rough. it ceased to feel like 'home.' the new owner is starting out much like we did- he and his family rented on the block for a couple of years and decided to make the street his home. he seems like a decent person. i do know that he has his hands full right off the bat with the neighborhood- that closed, white, blue collar, nosy neighborhood- he doesn't speak english fluently. and while his name is full of z's and y's- he isn't eastern european white. things that matter not to me- but hey, some things apparently are important to some people.

nevertheless, it is a good day in the betmo household- one that we have waited for since the damned porches had to be replaced :) we put the building on the market the first week of february and had the first showing that saturday. we had the offer by monday. the rest has been bureaucracy at it's finest- banks, loans and code folks. yep. now, the moment of truth has arrived and i am relieved and not the least bit sad. my house is my home and it has felt so from the moment we arrived. and that's a 'good thing.'

thanks shelly for the idea. be sure to visit thornie and brother tim- who both have their posts up. feel free to leave a link in the comments for others to toddle along to your place if you have jumped on the 'good fridays' bandwagon.

update: fiona jumped in at her place

rightwing roundup

it occurred to me that we, the people, are dismissing the rightwing ideology out of hand. well, about 75% of us in the latest poll anyway. it also occurred to me that we do so at our own peril. they may be out of office- but these folks still inflict damage- and we need to keep them marginalized. sounds harsh, but here's a quick rundown of why:

listening to limbaugh- yep, he is an 'entertainer' but his minions don't look at it that way. they tend towards hero worship and obeying his commands. there's a reason he calls them his 'army'

ain't nothin' new under the sun- the field negro gives us chomsky in 1979. odd, it sounds an awful lot like 2009

paramilitary right via tpm- more bachmann bullshittery and craziness

huckster huckabee is all about voter suppression- can't you take a joke?

heheheheheheheheh....

i have nothing to say other than-

heeheeheeheeheeheehee.......

the other lieberman

we hear endlessly on how militant islam is so very horrible. those 'sheet heads' want us dead because they hate us and our way of life. perhaps. the evidence i have seen supports the facts that what transpired on 9/11 was an inside job by the neocon movement here. domestic terrorism, if you will.

what i have seen- acts of terrorism committed against muslim folks in the form of invasion, war, torture, false imprisonment, etc., by america and israel. i have heard sabre rattling by the arab nations but so far, they are the ones who have kept their cool and kept the guns quiet. i have also come to realize that up is down and left is right and the whole world that i believed in is topsy turvy. so, when i think about what i was taught to believe, i immediately start looking at the opposite for the truth.

from the juan cole article linked above:

"Avigdor Lieberman, the Moldovan night club bouncer, is now foreign minister of Israel. The world has had a lot of fun laughing at the pronouncements of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who stands falsely accused of threatening to wipe Israel off the face of the map. But Ahmadinejad has protested that it would be wrong to kill large numbers of civilians.

In contrast, Lieberman has threatened to wipe at least two countries, Egypt and Palestine, off the map. Monstrously, he suggested bombing the Aswan Dam, which would have the effect of murdering all 80 million Egyptians and sweeping them into the Mediterranean in a vast continental African tsunami."

and this update for today- no concessions for palestinians. he's such a sweet guy

i have a pretty basic understanding of orthodox judaism- a former friend of mine converted with her family. needless to say, we have lost touch. that came about around the time i found out that she couldn't use the same door as men, had to keep her head covered at all times, couldn't be home alone with a man who wasn't her husband- even if they needed the furnace repaired, etc.. an american woman who came from a strict evangelical household who bravely divorced an abusive man in spite of the belief system- and she jumped from the frying pan and into the fire. no, her current husband is not abusive. i don't really have much respect for organized religion of any kind- christian, judaism, islam, hinduism- they all exist solely to keep folks under control. now, this is what we normally think about when we think radical islam:

"The fighters gather to celebrate their victory in a recent campaign against the enemy infidels. Singers are called in to raise an anthem in praise of the warriors.

Suddenly, there is outrage, consternation. Dozens of the fighters get up and stalk out of the celebration, along with their commanders. They are all deeply insulted, their religious faith has been assaulted, they have been exposed to a filthy evil which they cannot, will not, abide:

Some of the singers are.... women.

Just another day in a Taliban encampment? another example of the virulent woman-hatred and primitive fanaticism of Islamofascist zealots?

gift giving

i am all about gift giving- when i am feeling generous. see, gift giving is about wanting to GIVE someone a gift- for no reason or whatever reason you choose. my husband and i don't give each other gifts for holidays as a rule. with a few exceptions- birthday for example. why? because we give each other gifts when we feel like it. it's nice to commemorate special events- but we do so through spending time and enjoying good food and beverage or a movie.

my other philosophy on gift giving- the gift should be something that the receiver would want or need. not me. and i hate token gifts. hate them. what's the point. i hate grab bags and i hate doing cmas on a limit. irritates the crap out of me. if i am going to get my buddy dan'l a gift, for example, i know he really likes his weather station and lawn tools :) i may get him an accessory to go along with that- but i do know he won't need a pair of gloves or an ice scraper. i hate token gifts.

shocking

that this didn't hit mainstream

“This was a crisis that was fostered and boosted by the irrational behaviour of people who were white and blue-eyed, who before the crisis they looked like they knew everything about economics, but now have demonstrated they know nothing about economics,” he said, mocking the “gods of wisdom” who had had to be bailed out. “The part of humanity that is responsible should be the part that pays for the crisis,” he added."
