we aren't pagans- we are post christians. i'll let you in on a wee secret that you apparently haven't figured out yet-- americans are fairly tech savvy. somewhere along the way, they realized that science gives them a lot more than superstitious bullshittery. americans like not being christian newt because like belief in santa- they eventually grow up with nostalgic memories of the days gone by. unfortunately, there is about 20% of the population who haven't made the jump into adulthood yet and that god myth is a bit pervasive.
americans don't like god anymore than they like you- and i have a feeling that the two aren't mutually exclusive.
