'sunday morning coming down'

with thanks to kris kristofferson- i don't have a hangover :) but i have had a bought with some intestinal flu or something. my head has been killing me and--well i won't go into the realm of TMI. i happened upon this little gem in the news and it got me thinking- as usual:

"Although it has already taken nearly four decades to get this far in building the Internet, some university researchers with the federal government's blessing want to scrap all that and start over." (emphasis mine)

i guess i want to go on record as saying this- i am an independent thinker who leans left. if that labels me something- then fine. i would say i am probably progressive but i really don't think of myself in terms of labels. i do know what i don't identify with- the rigid, hierarchical, control driven mantra of the current movement afoot in our government. i guess in some ways i could be labeled a conservative because i believe less governmental involvement in our lives- the better. see, i think that the federal government should be limited- not expanded. i believe in individuality and free thinking- not conformity and being told what to do. i don't believe in homeland security and the bloated bureaucracy that is bankrupting this country to no good end. i also believe that there is a whole lotta waste going on that needs to be looked into.

"One challenge in any reconstruction, though, will be balancing the interests of various constituencies. The first time around, researchers were able to toil away in their labs quietly. Industry is playing a bigger role this time, and law enforcement is bound to make its needs for wiretapping known." (emphasis mine)

for me, government has played a big role in individual lives for decades- and this current regime is going for the gold- they are going for the power grab. so, i am doing what any decent american fighting for his or her country would do- i am fighting back with the tools that i have. i don't believe i have ever mislead anyone who reads here regularly into thinking that that hasn't been the case. there was a time when i thought reaching out to the other side was the way to go- bridge the gap and work together. well, i have gradually replaced that left wing nonsense with a more rightist approach- i don't really care what the other side says anymore. you can criticize me for that i suppose- but based on what it is that they are constantly spewing:

1) we are making progress in the middle east
2) there is no man made global warming- it's a natural climate change
3) our country's economy is sound
4) the rest of the world is wrong and we are right- and the best
5) gay folks are evil and abortion should be illegal

well, see, i don't agree with any of that and am not going to change my mind. the other side isn't going to change their mind either so dialogue isn't possible. reality and fantasy is like oil and water- they don't mix. so- i am here to say that i am a support the troops, anti-war advocate who is pro-enviroment and anti big government. i am against governmental corruption and pro- governmental oversight. i take in information and process it in that filter- so whatever that makes me- so be it. i stand by my claim that i am an independent thinker and i lean left because the majority of my views are there- and that hasn't changed. if it so happens that the majority of corruption seems to be coming from the right- well that isn't my fault now is it? i will be equally contemptuous of leftist corruption when it comes to light. i can only fight so many fires- and there is a lot of smoke from the right.

For a woman with a headache so early in the morning, you're writing pretty well, betmo.
As for the internet reconstruction, I'm wondering why, too. However, if the techies believe, as I do, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it," there must be something inherently wrong with the structure. I do not know enough to understand that part.
The whole thing still seems like magic to me. Maybe that is why I'm not sure messing it up is a good idea.
At the same time I realize that I'm old enough that I probably won't live long enough to be bothered. But my grandchildren will.
Hope you feel better and have a good Sunday...

thanks carol :) i am all for upgrading and changing for the better. anytime there is governmental involvement- especially this one- i get leery. if it was just a bunch of computer geeks fine-- but the article mentions not only the feds but industry as well. yes, the have a vested interest in the net- but again, i am leery. they have been working hand in glove with the feds and they definitely have their own agenda. i think i prefer the bugs in the system over control.

I'd have to agree with carol gee. You are in fine form this morning!

The Future Was Yesterday said...

Any "new internet" that has the "blessings of Government" means that everyday users are forgotten, because their interests, and government, are 180 degrees apart.

It was fun while it lasted.

Another thought occurred to me. Maybe the 'net doesn't NEED to be reinvented. Maybe this is just a way of shutting down the last frontier of free speech, and dissent?

I agree, anything the Gov wants to stick their noses in makes me cringe!

Sure don't eed me for that morning cuppa. Sounds like you get on without just fine.

You view can be dissected by many labels, but like you say, it doesn't matter. Freedom in one form means to be able to leave your home in the morning and go to work. In another, It means having a home and a job at all and be able to buy all the beer and cigarettes you want.

To me, freedom means exactly that. Freedom. To say and do and think what you want, and even when labeled, continue to think and say it.
Too bad that the more money you have, (or can create for someone else to get rich), the more freedom you have.

I mean, if you were Don Imus saying the things you are saying, someone would tell others you said them and people would read your words. Your opinions would be out there regularly. But here on line, you get a handful of readers, mostly members of the choir that sing as we do, and your wise words are left to die in cyberspace. Not too many that need to hear them, get to hear them.

The power of money is always the bottom line. But I am not saying give up or don't do it, I'm just disgusted that the wise ones among us, you and so many others, aren't the players that get heard. Instead we are forced to listen to the Imus's and the Anna Nicole's and not the Amy Goodman's.

Hey, but let's be peaceful about it.
