please take a moment and watch the short video. it gives a human to human perspective of a land many of us know little to nothing about.

"People everywhere basically want the same things, peace, love, family, friends, and to just enjoy life. "
Too bad that our government doesn't respect that.

betmo, thanks for this link. It was a lovely interlude via the magic of the internet.
Unfortunately, our current president maintains a scary kind of willful ignorance. He must not know this beautiful country is filled with so many beautiful young people. Else he would not ever think of raining destruction down upon it. Peace. . .

I'll bet Bush is sorely disappointed that the Brits are working WITH Iran to resolve the hostage situation. Everything that is unfolding in this situation shows a dramatic difference between the Bush bomb approach and the way humans can work things out.

I don't want to be the glass half empty but why did Iran do what they did in the first place. Then they paraded the female soilder around and weren't even smart enough to have someone who is fluent in english write her letter. Please don't jump on me just discuss. I would like peace as much as anyone but I really don't know how and yes I want our boys home from Iraq

in regards to iran- you can't look at the issue from a good guy/bad guy mentality. it is far more complex. the british were most likely in iranian waters because we and the british had been skirmishing for weeks in the area trying to goad the iranians into something. the british aren't hollering and sabre rattling because they know that they were wrong. they are negotiating because they don't want the story to come out. you have a region of the world that has had western interference and occupation on and off for centuries. you have russian and china behind the scenes- allies on the surface but negotiating in the background. our government has not been shown to be trustworthy- and they are not complex enough thinkers to leave well enough alone. iraq is one thing but iran has always been different. this is what happens when you go into an issue without having the facts- we are getting our asses handed to us. iran has the upper hand- why? because we dealt it to her through cheney and bush's ineptness. i don't count the soldiers apologies because they were coerced- but there's a reason that tony didn't send in the troops. we will never know the true story. i think iran wanted to make a point. i don't think britain wants the soldiers to stand trial because they don't want to admit that they were trying to spy on iran.

having said that- i don't believe iran is an innocent and benevolent society. they are a theocracy and they limit and restrict their nation's people. they want nuclear capabilities- and quite frankly, i don't blame them. russia and china are backing iran behind the scenes as we back israel. we are playing out the cold war through the middle east. the only problem is- our country is bankrupt. we don't have the money nor the troops to sustain warfare- and russia's involvement in afghanistan in the 1980's bankrupted that country. cheney and bush didn't want to hear that. they wanted what they wanted and they did it. now, we have to worry about a new power house on the block- and iran is pushing back. i think it imperative that we- here in america- learn about iran and the middle east as much as possible. not knowing has gotten us into a heap of trouble. forewarned is forearmed and the arrogant, shortsighted morons we have in the executive branch has gotten us into a world of hurt because they couldn't be bothered. the people of iran are not backwards and they are not afraid. they are persian. they are a proud people with a rich history and are not afraid to stand up for themselves. i think we need to be exposed to their side of things too- that is why i post the way i do. doesn't mean i agree. means it isn't my way or the highway. iranians are not necessarily terrorists- which is why they have not executed these folks the way the actual terrorist groups did when we first went into iraq. iranians are like egyptians- they differentiate themselves from 'arabs.' we should too.

i don't know enough about what's going on to answer the why part of your question- why parade them in front of the cameras and what not. i can suppose it is to prove that they are still alive so that the western media doesn't accuse them of killing or torturing them. i haven't heard that they have been severely mistreated as the other captured folks have been- again those were terrorist organizations. i think iran is proving how civilized a nation she is. why not set them free? well, what would we do if we found iranian soldiers in our coastal waters? we would hold them too. cheney and bush wouldn't do what blair and the brits are doing- they would just bomb them. the news makes it out that iran is bad for holding the poor soldiers. well, they were soldiers with orders and their orders were probably get as close to iranian waters as you can and see what you can see. they got too close and got caught. that's really probably it. they should be subject to international law. whether that will happen or not- remains to be seen.
