can someone please tell me...

i know nothing about military protocol but why is cheney the one handing mrs. ford the flag? is this proper military etiquette? i have seen the flag folded and handed to loved ones before- is he techinically allowed to do this? i realize he does what he wants now that he is open about running the show. i just didn't know if this was a snub to the ford family- being that gerald was a navy man and cheney never served a day.

My friend Betmo... You have a good eye. In protocol, and I have much experience folding the flags that have flown for a deceased Veteran, folding them, and marching them to the surviving relative and handing this flag to them, It is the Veteran that took the flag from the coffin that is suppose to give the flag to the relative which is, in this case, Mrs. Ford.

Incidently, I give a hand salute as I hand over this honored flag.

I would guess that chain dick probably did it because he is the vice president and took some limelight away from a real soldier. It is apropo, because they dishonor our soldiers every day that they allow an illegal and immoral war to be fought by our brave soldiers for thier greed, oil, money and profit.

God Damn him. My God, Damn him.

These turds who dodged and ducked have no idea of the damage they do when they "play soldier". Remember Bush in the flight suit?

you can thank my mom for spotting this- she watched parts of the funerals. she is the one who became upset- as i am sure families of soldiers did as well- at the breach of protocol. it is an insult to the memory of gerald ford- even more so because he never liked cheney and rumsfeld. who played a major role? cheney and rumsefeld gave eulogies. talk about shitty pool.

This is payback for the interview Ford gave where he said that he would never have tried to justify invading Iraq on the scant WMD evidence that BushCo™ used. This criminal occupation of the White House has got to stop. And of course the indecent residency in the Naval Observatory by Cheney.

Maybe that's it. Cheney thinks that his staying in the N.O. has made him a Navy man. They're not only criminal, they are delusional as well.

I did not know about this! This is an outrage to say the least if he handed the flag over. This is an insult to all that have ever worn a uniform!

I could not find an answer to your question.

All protocol guides (checked military sites) to who presents a folded casket flag to the family states:

The Chaplin leading the service or the lead military officer of the funeral detachment, should present the flag.

At the Presidential level, it seems the family can request anything it wants.

I would assume that the Ford family requested that Cheney give the flag to Mrs. Ford.

Protocol says the the folded flag should go to the eldest male of the family, but most families request that the flag be given to the mother or wife of the fallen solider.

So it seems this is not a set protocol.

I agree that it is an insult to have one as evil as Cheney perform such a solom duty.

His lies have caused the needless death of brave American soldiers. I can't think of anything worse, especially from the Vice-President of the United States.

Check out the look on the face of the guy in the background. In the "if looks could kill" contest, he'd at least be a silver medal winner.

Oh, and I second the outrage over the injustice of the chickenhawk handing Mrs. Ford the flag.
