constitution monday

"In these sentiments, Sir, I agree to this constitution, with all its faults, --if they are such; because I think a general Government necessary for us, and there is no form of government but what may be a blessing to the people, if well administered; and I believe, farther, that this is likely to be well administered for a course of years, and can only end in despotism, as other forms have done before it, when the people shall become so corrupted as to need despotic government, being incapable of any other."
benjamin franklin, excerpt from speech on final day of constitutional convention 9/17/1787

the declaration of independence

the constitution of the united states of america

the bill of rights

Nice post Betmo

Ol Ben Franklin was no slouch I hear - somewhat multi-talented.

The US was truly blessed with the talent and integrity it had at its beginning.

Otherwise it could have quickly sunk into military dictatorship - like so many other countries in the Americas.

I'll second spadmo.
It seems the real power of despotism is not that people support what despots do, well some inevitably do, even Saddam was popular in certain circles, and most right wing policy is only one hair's breadth away from Saddam's (or Iran's Ayatollahs)beliefs but that those who oppose the despots policies are overwhelmed by the apathy of those who don't care, or don't want to rock the boat - you know be seen as unpatriotic.
It was also unpatriotic not to support or agree with Nazi beliefs in Hitler's Germany.

Of course there is no military power which can invade the US, imprison the US despot, and restore democratic freedoms and rights to US citizens.

One asks if there could be any chance of the pentagon moving against the white house?
Or not?
Franklin, as did all of his time, believed that only men could govern, and then, only white men.
That in itself, must have been an instigating factor in the creation of todays` cabal of patriarchal despots.

Have we become corrupted enough yet?

landsker- i doubt that the pentagon- headed by rumsfeld- would move against his crony in power- cheney. they are a team.

time- the question is out there. i am hoping against hope that we are not. on any given day- i am not so sure.

Betmo.
With regards to the pentagon answering to rumspfelt, apparently he and dick, already requested the services of the military to attack and control the iranians.
The military told them to go someplace else, that having lost the war in Iraq, a second defeat was not going to happen.
Apparently, some "free-market" adviser called Grover Norquist is tied up in the fiasco.
